American woman shares things that will make French people 'hate' you

I’m an expat in Paris and these are the five things that will make French people ‘hate’ you when you visit

  • Amanda Rollins, originally from Boston, Massachusetts, moved to Europe in 2017
  • She has become an online star by showcasing what it is like to live in Paris
  • She went viral after candidly exposing what rubs French people the wrong way

A US woman living in Paris has shared the five things that are sure to make you enemies in the French capital – from misnaming champagne to having parties where no one is allowed to smoke.

Amanda Rollins is originally from Boston, Massachusetts, but moved to Europe in 2017 – and she has become a social media sensation by showcasing what it is really like to live in the City of Lights as an American.

According to the online star, the French dislike parties where they’re not allowed to smoke, and never take a bite of food until someone says ‘bon appétit’.

‘If you’re having a party, but say there’s no smoking allowed at the party – they will hate you,’ she said.

‘It’s why i don’t have parties here – it’s because I really like my French friends and I could tell if I kept having parties where they’re not allowed to smoke, it’s going to get a little risky and dangerous soon.

A US woman living in Paris has shared the five things that are frowned upon in the French capital – from snacking between meals to asking for a to-go box at restaurants

Five things that will make French people hate you

‘So, for the benefit of everyone, I’ve decided not to do it.’

Amanda also shared a strange mistake most non-Parisians don’t know they’re making – and it’s having the ‘wrong’ name.

‘If you’re named Kevin as a boy or Emily as a girl, it’s not your fault,’ she began. ‘But it’s not their fault that they hate you.’

The US woman joked that there was still time to look into an official name change to get into the good graces of the French.

The French dislike the name Kevin because it’s a widely associated with a ‘beauf’ or redneck.

‘Beauf’ is an insulting word for a poor, uneducated white person who lives in a country area of the US and has extreme conservative political opinions.

And ‘Emily’ is now well-known for Lily Collins’ titular character in ‘Emily in Paris’ where French people are often mocked and ridiculed.

In addition, Amanda warned against asking to take your leftovers home from a restaurant if you’re ever visiting Paris

‘Another mistake travellers make is beginning to eat their food before saying ‘bon appétit’ or before someone has said ‘bon appétit’ to them.

‘Them hating you for that is understandable – are you f**king crazy? Are you a lunatic? I really wouldn’t do it – you might even make enemies outside France.’

Amanda continued the joke: ‘They are actually incapable of taking the first bite before someone says ‘bon appétit’, so if you don’t say it you’re causing them to starve. There’s blood on your hands.’

The Boston woman also added that Parisians despise when Americans mistake prosecco (a sparkling wine made in Italy) for champagne (sparkling wine from the region of Champagne in France).

‘If you arrive at a dinner party with a bottle of prosecco and say it’s champagne – they hate you.’

Another food-related gripe the French hold is Americans placing US blue cheese on par with roquefort.

‘If a French person tries to give you roquefort, don’t tell them you’ve had blue cheese in America,’ she warned.

According to the online star, the French hardly ever eat between breakfast, lunch, and dinner – and munching while you’re on the move is totally frowned upon

Amanda previously shared another video of mannerisms that will definitely get you dirty looks in Paris.

‘Not saying you can’t do these things, you can do whatever the hell you want.

‘But if you do these things, you are gonna get dirty looks.

Amanda dished: ‘There’s one thing you can eat while walking – only one thing, a baguette’

‘Number one is eating while walking. The French don’t really snack.

‘There’s one thing you can eat while walking – only one thing, a baguette.

‘That is the only thing that is acceptable to eat while walking. Anything else, it’s just not super common.

‘You do not see people eating on the Metro. They eat at meals, and that’s it.’

Next up on Amanda’s list of things that Americans do that French people are not fond of was talking loudly.

She explained that people from the US often think they are using an ‘inside voice,’ but in reality, they are much louder than they realize.

‘Listen, I love you guys, I am you guys, I’m one of you. But you f**king scream. Americans – you f**king scream,’ she continued.

‘You’re screaming. Your voice that you think is your inside voice, no it’s not. It’s your outside voice.’

In addition, Amanda warned against asking to take your leftovers home from a restaurant if you are ever visiting Paris.

‘Asking for a to-go box at a restaurant, that’s really uncommon and super un-French,’ she told her followers.

Next up on Amanda’s list of things that Americans do that French people are not fond of was talking loudly

The influencer explained that the portion sizes in France are usually perfect for what ‘a normal human would eat in one meal,’ so it’s very uncommon to ‘not finish your meal.’

‘French people finish their meals, like I said, they don’t snack. If they’re sitting down for a meal, they’re gonna have the whole meal,’ she explained.

‘It’s very uncommon for you to not finish your meal, and then if you do, it’s even more uncommon to ask for a box. You can, I’ve done it, but you might get looks.’

The TikToker said that another thing that French people don’t like is when you dress too casually in public.

She advised against wearing ‘anything comfortable’ like athleisure clothes, sweatpants, or leggings when you go out.

‘If I could live my whole life in sweatpants, I f**king would. But you’re not gonna see it [in Paris],’ she revealed.

‘Athleisure is for the gym or your home. If you leave the house in like leggings or sweatpants or even joggers, you’re gonna get looks, it’s just not how people dress here.’

But on the other end of the spectrum, Amanda said you should be careful about dressing too fancy when you’re exploring Paris

While speaking to the New York Post about the TikTok, Amanda explained that it’s a ‘generalisation’ based on her ‘observations’ from living abroad

But on the other end of the spectrum, Amanda said you should be careful about dressing too fancy when you’re exploring Paris.

‘If you’re going out in Paris wearing a short skirt and heels, or just like being overly dolled up, you’re also gonna get some looks,’ she added.

‘For the most part, when we go out on a Friday night, it’s jeans and a top with boots, sneakers, flat shoes, or maybe small heels, but like you are not gonna see the full attire – the full mini skirt, heels, makeup.’

Amanda concluded the video by reminding her followers that they can ‘do whatever they want,’ stating, ‘who cares if you get looks?’

While speaking to the New York Post about the TikTok, Amanda explained that it’s a ‘generalisation’ based on her ‘observations’ from living abroad.

‘The things I mention are from my observations of life in Paris, my personal experiences, and what I’ve heard from French people,’ she said.

‘These are simply observations. Life in France is different from the US in many ways, and these are just some of the quintessential American things that could raise some eyebrows over here in Paris.’
