Axed Neighbours shares moving message to devastated fans

Neighbours has shared an emotional statement thanking fans for their support in the wake of the news the show is facing the axe after 37 years.

The Aussie soap’s future is uncertain following Channel 5’s announcement that it would be dropping it from their schedules later this year.

Unless Network 10, which produces the show in Australia, can find a new broadcast partner, Neighbours will come to an end in August, as Channel 5 is currently funding much of the show’s production.

Fans were understandably crushed by the news and the prospect of losing Ramsay Street, but they’re determined to save their show from cancellation.

#SaveNeighbours has repeatedly trended on social media, while a petition was launched, and has already garnered over 20,000 signatures. It can be viewed here.

Neighbours, meanwhile, has taken note of the love and support, telling audiences that they are ‘overwhelmed’ by their actions during what is no doubt a difficult time for cast, crew and fans worldwide.

‘We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support from our amazing viewers during this time,’ wrote the show’s official Twitter account.

‘We have the best fans. We have always been in this together and we love each and every one of you.’

No, you’re crying.

The serial drama’s future is now in the hands of fate, but viewers are hoping and praying that another network can come to its rescue – which is actually a possibility.

Network 10 is reportedly intent on continuing their association with the show, with a spokesperson telling TV Tonight that they are ‘hopeful’ Freemantle will find a new broadcast partner.

RTÉ, which airs the soap in Ireland, is currently ‘in talks’ with Fremantle.

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1:45pm and 6pm on Channel 5.
