Baking soda toothpaste: How to whiten your teeth with baking soda

Baking soda is used in baking, cleaning and apparently now dental care. We all want gleaming white teeth, but the costs of getting your gnashers whitened professionally are too high for most of us. Express.co.uk chatted to Lucie Marchelot Shukla, Co-Founder of Instant Dentist & Straight Teeth Direct and London-based dentist Dr Kamala Aydazadato to find out how to whiten your teeth with baking soda if it’s safe to do so.

No one’s teeth are pure white, it’s normal for your teeth to be slightly yellow.

Lucie explained: “Teeth are made of two layers, the enamel which is more white and the dentine underneath which is more yellow/cream in colour.

“When teeth have healthy thick enamel they look whiter and following enamel erosion the dentine underneath becomes more exposed, making the teeth appear more yellow.

“This is the main reason for healthy teeth to become yellow as part of the normal ageing process.”

When it comes to whitening your teeth, most whitening products sold over the counter won’t be strong enough to whiten your teeth to the level you want.

Lucie said: “Due to cosmetic regulations there is a limit on the percentage of peroxide contained in products sold over the counter, therefore, this peroxide strength could improve the tooth colour by maximum one or two tooth shades but if you have thin enamel it will have a limited effect.”

The trendy LED light whitening kits aren’t worth it either.

Lucie explained: “There is a big trend with the kits that include LED light in them which we see all over Instagram and social media; while it may look cool in selfies the theory behind the LEDs emitted speeding up whitening when it comes into contact with peroxide is debatable.

“Research shows that the use of light activator sources with bleaching treatment of vital teeth did not increase the efficacy of bleaching or accelerate the bleaching.

“If the blue light whitening kit contains a peroxide gel, the colour of your teeth will improve as a result of that but the light, however, has nothing to do with this process.”

How to whiten your teeth with baking soda

Although Lucie recommends using custom-fitted teeth whitening trays with a whitening solution to whiten your teeth, you can use baking soda to whiten your teeth too.

She said: “Baking soda is used in some toothpaste and can potentially help with surface staining but it won’t change the tooth colour.”

Dr Ayadaza said baking soda is an effective and minimally abrasive method, but there are much safer ways to whiten teeth.

If you still want to try baking soda to whiten your teeth you should mix a tablespoon of it with some water to make a paste.

Brush the mixture on your teeth with a soft brush or your finger for two minutes.

Spit it out and rinse your mouth with water.

Don’t go overboard with this hack, only do this once every so often – definitely don’t try it more than once a week.
