Secret speakeasy bars are popping up all over the UK – you just have to know where to look or who to ask for.
And one hidden London bar serving up delicious cocktails and disco fries requires you to locate a fridge and ask to ‘see the Mayor’.
Not the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, but the Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town.
To find The Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town, drinkers will first have to make their way to The Breakfast Club on Artillery Lane, who serve a cracking fry up.
You can dine at the cafe, or tell a member of staff you’re ‘here to see the Mayor’ before you’re directed through what looks like an ordinary Smeg fridge.
Behind the steely exterior is a bolt hole filled with vintage furniture, unusual wall art, and an extensive cocktail menu, which TikTok user @talllllllxo shared on the popular video app.
Drinkers can even bag themselves a free drink if they have valid proof that their name is ‘Garfield’.
There are some ground rules to The Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town, in that customers can never leave via the fridge in The Breakfast Club, but instead, exit via a different door through the restroom.
'Most Instagram-worthy cafe in UK' has Love Hearts walls and Lucky Charm lattes
The Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town said: “Act nonchalantly as if you’ve just had a pee. Gentleman, you are advised to leave your fly down to add to the charade. Ladies, if you’d leave your skirt in your knickers, it would be greatly appreciated.
“Toilet paper stuck to your shoe also gets a big thumbs up.”
Last entry is at 11pm when the ‘cat flap is down’ for the evening – and the bar’s small interior is all part of the experience.
A spokesperson added: “As you can probably see, there isn’t enough room to swing a Scaredy Cat round here. Cosy proximity to your fellow drinkers is part and parcel of your experience. It’s like the tube but more fuzzy and friendly.”
