Bear Grylls said it was a ‘privilege’ to give Prince George his first ant to eat at the age of six after the pair were introduced by the Carole Middleton.

The British adventurer met George, now eight, after being invited by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to skipper a yacht during the King’s Cup regatta, a three day charity sailing race off the Isle of Wight in August in 2019.

Grylls, who ended up winning the Cowes Week race, says it was Kate’s mother who asked the presenter to meet the young royal after revealing he was a big fan of Bear’s interactive Netflix special.

The 47-year-old says that George looked at him with ‘amazing wide eyes’ after he asked him whether he had ever eaten an insect, and hailed him a ‘hero’ for ‘facing his fears’.

When asked about feeding the then six-year-old his first ant on Good Morning Britain today, he said: ‘I didn’t really mean to.

‘We were doing something for Prince William’s Kings Cup event. We were down and the royal family were there and it was the Duchess of Cambridge’s mother who said “Will you come and say hello to George? He’s a big fan of your Netflix interactive show.”

‘We were chatting and just as we were chatting a stream of ants went across his feet and we looked at them, he looked at me with those amazing wide eyes and I said “Come on”, and he said “Really!”

Bear has previously recommended eating ants as a survival technique in his shows.

‘We ate and it was a privilege to give the future king his first ant,’ Bear recalled. ‘His eyes lit up as they do with anyone when they’re out in the wild and face a few fears and overcome them. Good for him, what a hero.’

Bear detailed the encounter in his latest memoir, Never Give Up, revealing that George had given a look of ‘trepidation and excitement’ when a stream of insects walked past their feet.

‘I knew that look well’, he wrote. ‘I smiled at him and said, ‘Have you ever eaten an ant?’ He shook his head nervously. ‘You want to? Just you and me?’ He looked around, then back at me, and nodded. I grabbed one ant for him and got him to hold it between his fingers, then got one for myself. ‘One, two, three, and in it goes… ready?’

‘He looked more nervous now. I smiled reassuringly. ‘It’ll be fine. We can do this… OK? One, two, three, here we go!’ I will never tire of that wonderful grimace on people’s faces as they eat something from the survivor menu for the first time.

‘Whoever they are, it’s always priceless. But I don’t think I will ever see wider eyes than Prince George’s, nor a broader grin. It was a fun moment that I hope, when he is king one day and I am an old man, he might still remember. After all, who can ever forget eating their first ant?’

The adventurer also told the story of when he fed former President Barack Obama a salmon that had been ravaged by a bear – despite the best efforts of the secret service.

The pair were filming an episode of Running Wild with Bear Grylls in 2015 and had found a salmon carcass along the side of the road which he picked up and preserved in between two pieces of moss in his bag.

Appearing on GMB this morning he said: ‘We’d done a scout the day before to find a good route and found all these half eaten carcasses along the river where the bears had been eating them.

‘So I thought that’s going to be perfect for us to have for lunch, secret service went “no”, first of all he never eats on camera or drinks. If we do that we’ll have to have special salmon ready.

‘But the President was great , we sat down and had a cup of tea. I started cooking it,  I could see the White House chef with a platter behind the camera, but he never asked for it.

‘So we sat down and had the salmon and the crew then had the fancy salmon later that night.’
