We probably all know that we should be wearing an SPF on our faces all year round, but when months pass without any sight of sun, it’s all too easy to dismiss this essential skincare step.

It’s widely acknowledged that protecting yourself from the sun is one of the most important steps in the fight against premature skin ageing. But what if you’re also currently trying to manage oily skin, lighten pigmentation or hydrate dry patches?

Fortunately you don’t have to forgo your other skin concerns in favour of staying sun safe. Nowadays there are a host of smart facial SPFs that promise skincare benefits aside from the obvious long-term anti-ageing effects. Whatever your skin issue, there’s an SPF for you – so now there are no excuses…

If you have… dry skin

Hawaiian Tropic Mineral Skin Nourishing Milk SPF 30, usually £8 here, has an easily-absorbed milky texture yet leaves a long-lasting feeling of hydration on the skin, making it a dream to apply, and a godsend for parched complexions. It's also a mineral sunscreen, which are great for sensitive skin types, and it gets bonus points for its heavenly, holiday-in-a-tube scent, too.

You can pick up a 30ml travel-size tube – plenty enough for a weekend getaway – inside this month’s OK! Beauty Box, alongside five other summer essentials like a cooling mist, a volumising hairspray, and a redness-reducing moisturiser. The contents are worth over £70 in total, but new customers can pick it up for just £9* when they sign up for the monthly subscription service.

If you have… fine lines

OK, ALL sun creams are technically anti-ageing products, but some include a little extra help. Combining science with nature, Dr Dennis Gross All-Physical Lightweight Wrinkle Defense Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 30, £46 here, blends a zinc oxide filter with a powerful antioxidant-rich blend of botanical extracts – bearberry, Scandinavian lingonberry and sea buckthorn. These work to protect the skin against the ageing effects of UVA, UVB and HEV (blue light), and also repair some of the damage already done.

If you have… pigmentation

According to Nivea, 28% of women cite pigmentation as their number one skin concern, and it can be triggered by a number of factors: genetics, age, hormones fluctuations – and sun exposure. Nivea Cellular Luminous630 Anti-Dark Spot Day Fluid SPF50, £26.99 here, is a win-win – made with a smart new ingredient that inhibits melanin production, it not only defends against future dark spots developing, but also working to reduce existing ones too, in as little as four weeks. It also gets top marks for its luxurious hydrating texture and pleasant almond-like scent.

If you have… dullness

If getting a glow is always your number one skin goal, now you can downsize your radiance-boosting routine into one skin-illuminating product. Supergoop! GlowScreen SPF 30, from £15 here, is your moisturiser, sun protection and primer in one, delivering light hydration, a subtle pearlised glow, and the perfect grippy base for make-up. Even if you don’t wear make-up, it gives a lovely “your skin but better” effect.

If you have… oily skin

Typically if you had greasy or spot-prone skin, the thought of applying a thick, claggy sunscreen was about as appealing as eating a vindaloo on a scorching hot day. But SPF doesn’t just come in the form of rich creams nowadays, and we’re particularly impressed by La Roche-Posay’s new Hyalu B5 Aquagel SPF 30, £34.50 here.

As its name suggests, it’s a refreshing gel texture packed with hyaluronic acid – yes, it’s hydrating, but it’s an ‘instantly-absorbed, plumped-from within’ kind of hydration, rather than a ‘sitting and sweating on the skin’s surface’ type, and a lovely lightweight option for oily skin.

*Discount code redeemable against one-month rolling subscriptions to new customers only. OK! Beauty Box subscription is then £15 per month thereafter
