Bobby Brown speaks out on son’s death: It’s ‘devastated my family’

Bobby Brown said his late son Bobby Brown Jr. wasn’t addicted to drugs prior to his fatal overdose in March.

The New Edition crooner opened up in a new interview about his son’s death and explained that he knew he had dabbled in some narcotics.

“He wasn’t a user. He would experiment with different things. It wasn’t like he was dependent on drugs like when I was in my situation,” Brown said on Wednesday’s episode of Facebook Watch’s “Red Table Talk,” referring to his addiction issues in the past.

“I depended, I needed it. He was a young man who tried the wrong stuff and it took him out of here.”

Bobby Jr. died at age 28 after accidentally overdosing on fentanyl. Following his son’s death, Brown called for justice against the people who supplied Bobby Jr. with the drugs.

“This epidemic is out of control and those supplying this lethal drug should be held responsible for the death and destruction that it causes,” the star said.

But Brown, 52, admitted to Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith and Adrienne Banfield-Norris during his “Red Table Talk” appearance that he felt “guilty” about his son witnessing some of his former drug use.

“I’ve been through my time, and I know my time played a part in my son feeling he could test something,” he said. “I feel guilty about that.”

The “My Prerogative” singer said losing Bobby Jr. was “very unexpected, just like losing” his daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown was.

His daughter with ex-wife Whitney Houston died in July 2015 at the age 22, six months after she was discovered unresponsive in a bathtub. Her fiancé, Nick Gordon, was later found legally responsible for her death.

Of his own sobriety, Brown said he’s been clean from drugs for 19 years but has been sober from alcohol for nearly a year. He said he decided to stop drinking after he started “losing bodily function.”

“My body started shutting down because I was drinking that much. My body was giving out on me,” he explained. “… I couldn’t accept going to the bathroom on myself.”

Now that he’s totally clean, Brown said he goes “to sleep now, I don’t pass out.”
