Chelsea vs Brentford betting preview
There’s something of an end-of-season feel to Wednesday’s game at Stamford Bridge where two out-of-form sides will go head-to-head.
Chelsea’s miserable season has been well documented and they come into this one in 11th place in the Premier League table, one behind west London neighbours Brentford.
While Frank Lampard and Thomas Frank will doubtless be telling their players that Europe remains an achievable objective, the fact is Chelsea are 11 points behind seventh-placed Liverpool now. Brentford are six back but have played a game more than the Reds – and three more than Brighton, another side above them in the standings.
It’s therefore hard to see there being a great deal at stake in this contest. Indeed, it’s easy to believe both sets of players will be starting to look towards their summer holidays. The tag ‘on the beach’ looks likely to be labelled to several soon.

Perhaps the talk of Mauricio Pochettino becoming Chelsea’s new manager will buck some ideas up, the Blues’ players having clearly not been shaken up by the temporary appointment of Frank Lampard, who has lost all four of his games in charge to date.
Still, whatever announcements are made before kick-off, two teams struggling for goals (see below) look unlikely to produce a thrilling affair and going under the goal line looks one of the best bets – after all, Stamford Bridge has seen fewer goals than any other Premier League ground in 2022/23.
Chelsea’s financial splurge has failed to result in them signing a goalscorer – of course, Romelu Lukaku remains out on loan at Champions League semi-finalists Inter Milan – and if their defence is able to stop Brentford major goal threat, Ivan Toney, even a 0-0 draw could be on the cards.

Chelsea vs Brentford key stats
- Stamford Bridge is the Premier League stadium which has seen the fewest goals this season – just 31 in 16 games.
- Chelsea are without a win in their last seven games in all competitions, scoring only three goals during that run.
- Brentford arrive having not won in six, a streak which has punctured hopes of European football next season.
- Ivan Toney has scored the first goal of a Premier League game eight times this season – only Harry Kane has landed the first-scorer bet more often.
- No player has committed more fouls in this season’s Premier League than Chelsea’s Kai Havertz, while Brentford’s Ivan Toney sits fourth in that list.
Chelsea vs Brentford best bets
Under 2.5 goals
61% of Chelsea’s games this season have landed this bet – only two other Premier League sides have a better such record. Brentford also land this bet more often than not (53%).
Both sides are also struggling to score at the moment with Chelsea having only scored once in their last six matches in all competitions, while the Bees have two in their last four.
The bookies make this pretty much a pick ‘em affair but the evidence points towards going under the goal line.

Ivan Toney first goalscorer
The case for a low-scoring game has been made above but if anyone is capable of finding the net, it could well be Toney.
Only Erling Haaland and Harry Kane have more Premier League goals this season and, with Chelsea’s goalscoring problems clear for all to see, Brentford could well open the scoring here.
Toney has been the first scorer on eight occasions so far – only Kane (9) has a better record in this market. He also takes penalties and is very good at them!

Kai Havertz & Joao Felix 1+ shot on target each
With Chelsea in need of goals, expect these two to start in the home forward line – and extend their record of landing this bet at Stamford Bridge.
It’s delivered for backers in four of the last five when they’ve both started with both players’ stats strong for 1+ shot on target.
Felix has managed it in 10 of his 12 starts since arriving on loan from Atletico Madrid, while Havertz has delivered in seven of his last eight.
Brentford have conceded more shots on target than any other side in the top flight – opponents average 5.31 per game against them – so look good opponents for the bet.
