Claw back some dough and make great savings on baked goods with our savvy tips

DOUGH! The Dorchester Polo Lounge in London this week sparked outrage by charging £16 for bread and butter.

But at least it inspired some great saving ideas on baked goods. Use your loaf and follow my tips.

TIME IT RIGHT: Most super-markets start discounting the bread and items in the bakery aisle around 4pm, so drop in and stock up on bargains. The fresh bakery goods tend to be reduced a bit later, around 6-7pm.

MAKE BREAD MULTITASK: Turn the simple loaf into breakfast, lunch and dinner. Toast and eggs for brekkie, sarnies for lunch, and for dinner get creative with croque monsieur, pizza toast, mushrooms on toast or a good old chip butty. Cheap, cheerful and tasty.

DIY YOUR LOAF: It’s so easy to make bread — you just need dried yeast, flour, salt and oil — and it tastes so much better than shop-bought. Get the family involved and bake a few loaves and you can freeze them for later.

FREEZE IT: Talking of freezing, never, ever throw away leftover bread. Whizz into breadcrumbs and keep in the freezer to create crunchy chicken coatings and crispy pasta bake toppings.

BARGAIN BAKED GOODS: To get a real steal, use the Olio or Too Good To Go apps to pick up “magic mystery bags” of baked goods that would have gone in the bin, from cafes in your area. Even the likes of Greggs are on the app.

STRETCH YOUR TALENTS Make tasty side dishes by switching up your bread choices and saving at the same time. Instead of frozen garlic bread for £1 a time, I buy packs of pitta bread for around 50p and brush it with garlic and butter before heating in the oven — so that a 50p pack goes pretty far. You can also swap your £3 naan for a flatbread, made by mixing flour and natural yoghurt, rolling and grilling.
