Couple adopts ‘perfect’ baby boy – then 18 years later realise mistake

A couple took painstaking care to raise their baby boy with sensitivity towards his culture when they adopted him – only to make an incredible mistake.

In a TikTok video uploaded on December 31, user @mrsmedeiros shares the cringe-inducing "today I f***ed up" story shared on Reddit from a white couple who adopted a baby from an Asian racial background.

The couple were smitten with the baby they were matched with and promised his birth parents to raise him well.

"We assured them the child would be loved which was the truth because we instantly fell in love with our baby boy," they said.

The couple began to feel guilty after eight months of looking after their "perfect Chinese son" and decided to make an effort to connect the infant with his cultural roots.

As a result, they befriended people in the Chinese ex-pat community near where they lived, including a couple who became their son's "aunt and uncle" figures.

They also made sure to take family holidays to China and had their son became well-versed in Mandarin, the nation's official language.

Unfortunately, 17 years down the road when they helped the lad with his college application forms they stumbled upon his birth certificate again and realised a major mistake.

His birth parents' surnames were "Park" and "Kim" – Korean, not Chinese.

The video has been "liked" more than 2.8 million times since it was uploaded on the video-sharing app by user @mrsmedeiros, with people stunned at the colossal error.

One person commented: "I imagine party conversations like, 'Yeah I'm Korean, speak Mandarin, and I have white parents."

"That boy became double confused," said another.

In an effort to look on the bright side, other people said it was nice the couple "put in the effort" even though they got their son's nationality and culture wrong.

One said: "Well hey, Mandarin is one of the world’s most spoken languages so they did good."
