A dog groomer who dyes her pooch luminous metallic colours has claimed she’s managed to convince people that her pet is a new ‘out of this world’ breed known as a ‘Galaxy Dane’.

Sierra Schoon, from Grand Junction in Colorado, began colouring her psychiatric service dog, Echo, two, using pet-safe dye when she was six months old but it’s her recent cosmic-themed handiwork that’s really turned heads.

The 22-year-old claims she’ll pull admirers’ legs by saying her coat is a ‘galaxy’ shade and has managed to fool many by claiming it’s amazing what can be achieved by ‘selective breeding’ these days.

Sierra said her grooming has improved the reception Echo – who weighs 130lbs – receives in public by making her appear ‘friendlier’ to those not used to large dogs.

The animal lover claims Echo relishes all the attention she receives due to her eye-catching colour which has seen her blossom from a ‘very shy’ dog into one who now loves the limelight.

Photos Sierra shared of her blanketed Harlequin Dane have amassed more than 4,000 likes and comments – and she’s even been hailed as the ‘coolest thing’ some have ‘ever laid eyes on’.

Sierra said: ‘It became a joke that we tell people when they’re like, “Oh, is that dog naturally colored this way?” and we say “Yeah, she’s a Galaxy Dane”.’

Sierra claims that some members of the public think the look has been achieved by ‘selective breeding’

‘You kind of stand there for a minute, look at their reaction and let them stew and then finally tell them, “No, she’s dyed that way”.

‘People have actually been convinced – they’ve said that they’ve “never seen a dog that’s bred that color” or asked if it’s some “sort of selective breeding now” – some of the weirdest things.

‘I never thought that anybody would ever think that a dog would naturally be pink or blue – let alone pink, blue, purple and turquoise.

Sierra said that most ‘absolutely love’ the eye-catching color of Echo’s coat (pictured left and right)

‘It’s funny because you tell them “No, she’s not colored that way” and they’re like “Oh, ok, I feel a lot better”.’

Sierra said that most ‘absolutely love’ the eye-catching color of Echo’s coat and that it’s even been likened to a ‘cracked-open geode’.

The dog groomer of three years said she achieves the unique look by using vegetable-based Arctic Fox hair dye and that Echo will happily sit there and be pampered for three to four hours.

Sierra said: ‘It’s a pretty special and fun thing for her and I to do and gives us a great bonding experience.

‘When we go into public too it’s a nice thing for people not to be scared of her since she’s so big – she weighs 130lbs and stands about 32 inches at her shoulder.

‘She gets very nervous around people when they get uncomfortable and purposely avoids her in public because of her size, and it affects her – she can feel it because she’s so friendly.

‘It allows people to feel just a little bit more at ease when they’re around such a big dog – the color helps and lightens the mood.

‘There’s been a change in her personality since before I started coloring her.

‘In a way it tends to bring out her personality a little more, I don’t know if that’s because it brightens her up.

‘After she’s colored and I tell her that she’s such a pretty girl and she hears others tell her she’s so pretty – it makes her more vibrant and feel good.’
