Supermarket opening hours are always reduced on a Sunday, thanks to the Sunday Trading Act of 1994. Shops are only allowed to open for six consecutive hours on Sundays, normally between 10 am and 6 pm. The act also enforces store closures on specific days of the year, such as bank holidays like Good Friday and Easter Monday. if you’re popping to the shops this weekend, you make need to check opening times before you set off for Tesco, Morrisons and Asda.

Easter opening hours

All large shops must close on Easter Sunday and Christmas Day in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The rules state that large stores of more than 280 square metres must not open on these days, and there are significant fines for those who fail to comply with these requirements.

Scotland can continue to have “normal trading hours” though.

All stores can stay open on Good Friday (April 2), Easter Saturday (April 3) and Easter Monday (April 5), as these are not Public Holidays.

Although the stores may be closed, staff may still be required to come in and work.

The UK Government website states: “There is no automatic right for workers to have public holidays off, including Christmas Day and Easter Sunday, unless it’s in their contract.”

These workers might get extra pay for working these days, but this is entirely up to individual companies.

You aren’t entitled to extra pay for working in retail on Easter Sunday unless it is stated in your contract.

The following shops are exempt from Sunday trading hours and may be open on Easter Sunday:

  • airport and railway station outlets
  • service station outlets
  • registered pharmacies selling only medicinal products and medical and surgical appliances
  • farms selling mainly their own produce
  • outlets wholly or mainly selling motor or bicycle supplies and accessories
  • suppliers of goods to aircraft or sea-going vessels on arrival at, or departure from, a port, harbour or airport
  • exhibition stands selling goods

What time does Tesco open?

Tesco’s opening hours for Easter weekend have not been confirmed yet.

Opening hours may differ from store to store, so double check your local Tesco’s opening hours on the store locator here.

Express.co.uk has contacted Tesco to find out the opening hours and will update this article when more information is provided.

It is likely that large Tesco stores will be closed but smaller stores like Tesco Express and Tesco Metro will remain open like they did last year.

All Tesco stores should be open on Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Monday as normal.

Morrisons

Last year, the Morrisons website advised customers to check the Store Finder to find out Easter Sunday opening times.

However, the stores continued to operate during the normal opening times (8 am-8 pm Monday to Saturday) during the week and closed on Easter Sunday.

The same is likely to happen this year, but Morrisons has not released blanket opening hours for every store.

Express.co.uk has contacted Morrisons for more information and will update this article when the hours are confirmed.

Asda

Just like every other supermarket, large Asda stores cannot open on Easter Sunday.

However, you still have time to shop for eggs as Asda stores will all be allowed to open in the days leading up to Easter.

You may also visit Asda on Easter Monday to purchase some leftover Easter Eggs if you don’t have a chance to visit before the store closes on Easter Sunday.

Check the store locator here to find the nearest Asda to you and its opening times.
