Engagement ring fails from being made of hair to lewd message engraving

Everything around a wedding is supposed to be perfect on the day. From the flowers, to the weather, to the venue. But it all starts with the proposal.

Some say yes, some say no to yet they are all, hopefully, romantic..

And the actual engagement ring used for the all important proposal could be a deal breaker.

For example – would you say yes to someone who proposed using their own hair? What about a person who implied they wanted something dirty on their wedding ring?

Read on for five of our favourite engagement disasters.

A hairy situation

It's generally accepted that if you are going to propose to the person you love, you do it with jewellery of some kind.

A ring's the most obvious, but also people can use earrings, lockets, necklaces and plenty of other things.

But a lock of hair is certainly not what you'd expect.

And that's exactly what one man decided to do, opting against the traditional way of getting down on one knee by choosing to chop off his own tresses as a token of his love.

Reddit users were left bewildered by the unorthodox decision to propose to his fiancé with a lock of his own hair.

In a picture posted online, you can see the handful of hair wrapped around the soon-to-bride's finger in the shape of a ring.

The 'ring' is apparently just a temporary fixture until a new band is done – and what that new band is we can't be sure.

The post read: "Happy Friday! My boyfie is now my FIANCE!

"He proposed with a ring made a lock of his OWN. HAIR."

No, that's too fancy

Hair is one thing that we could see a reason for people being weirded out by – but a three-carat diamond ring should surely be shown off?

Not the case for one bride-to-be, who instead opted to wear a rubber band around her finger instead of the flash ring her boyfriend had given her.

TikTok user @tiktokarash shared the story with a short clip of his bride-to-be using her phone, writing: "My Persian wife is ashamed of her 'small' 3-carat diamond ring so she wears this rubber thing instead."

Some users tried to reassure the bloke that her reason may not be because she's ashamed and maybe for "security reasons".

Another said: "Why to get a ring so big you’re afraid to wear it for fear of being robbed. Everyone is so extra these days.”

However, others believe he should get rid of the ring – or even her – if she won't wear it.

Two decades wearing a 'fake ring'

Thankfully, a lot of people do manage to make it all the way to an engagement and even a wedding. But sometimes, the problems don't stop there.

One teacher found out, to her horror, that the 'diamond' engagement ring she had been wearing for 20 years was fake.

And even worse, it happened in school, in front of her students and caused a massive row with her partner.

AND it was caught on video!

In the clip, the students ask if they can use their portable diamond tester on the teacher's very fancy-looking piece of bling.

The teacher gladly passes over the massive rock and says it is a particularly special diamond.

Several uncomfortable pauses later, the beeper still hasn't made a sound, indicating the diamond is a fake.

"It's supposed to make a beep noise," he explains, as the bar fails to go past a "three" on the density scale.

The student tells his gutted teacher it is "straight glass" and asks her: "You say you’ve been married 20 years?

"Not going to lie I don’t think it’s real."

We then see the teacher sitting behind her desk and interrogating her husband over the phone while the student slyly films further away.

She scolds him down the phone, yelling: "You knew it wasn’t real? "And you still gave it to me after 20 years? So this is what I’m going to get?"

Noticing the lad is still filming on his phone, she says: "And you, get out!"

Getting it wrong after getting it right

Sometimes, a groom can think he got it spot on, but still manages to make an error.

One bride-to-be explained how she's been with her fella for three years and had shown him pictures of chunky rings that she liked.

But she claimed the one he chose was small and made her finger look "like Michelin man."

In the first few days, the woman wondered if she should lose weight to make it fit better, until she decided to just come clean.

She wrote: "He got really mad. I asked him why he bought this specific ring knowing what I liked. He said it was the ring his mum and grandma helped him pick out – they said the ring was nice."

Rude inscription on wedding band causes laughs

We have to finish with a funny one – involving a new bride, her wedding band and one genius inscription.

The woman, called Jen, didn't make the discovery until the day of their wedding and was keen to publicly shame her husband.

Before saying "I Do" to her fiancé and letting him place the shiny piece of jewellery onto her finger in front of all of their friends and family, the bride read the inscription on the inside of the silver wedding band.

Her husband-to-be had written: "Yes, Jen I still want them," on the inside of her ring.

What was the them relating to? Oral sex.

Jen revealed all in a ring shaming Facebook page, admitting she wanted her husband to be shamed for his actions.
