When it comes to football things don’t always go the team’s way, but no matter what happens, there are plenty of players who can count on their childhood sweethearts to cheer them on.
Many of the current England squad are lucky enough to married to or still dating their childhood girlfriends, with Captain Harry Kane leading the pack.
Kane, 27, who scored his first Euros goal in the match against Germany has known his wife, Kate Goodland, with whom he has three children, since they were young football fans growing up in East London.
The couple were famously pictured together as youngsters when they were both 11 and met their hero and fellow East Ender David Beckham at the launch of his football academy.
Seven years after that photo was taken, Harry and Kate began dating, and they married in 2019.
The long term couple now have two daughters, Ivy and Vivienne, and a son, Louis, and live in Essex. Kate, also 27, has a degree in sports science and works as a fitness instructor.
Previously Harry, whose teammates call him ‘H’ said: “When I was in school she was my friend. “We always spoke, but just got closer and closer and it went from there. She's seen my whole career. Of course she's finding it a little crazy.”
There are a further seven England players in the team who are still either married to or dating their childhood sweethearts.
Goalie Jordan Pickford and his wife Megan Davison went on their first date their first date to the cinema while he was a pupil at St Robert of Newminster Catholic School where they grew up in Washington, Tyne and Wear.
Pickford was just sweet 16 and Morgan was 14 and the cute couple have been together ever since.
The devoted couple now share a son, Arlo, who was born in 2019 after Megan graduated from university.
The couple tied the knot in March 2020 at a register office in Crewe, after having to postpone their lavish Maldives nuptials due to the pandemic.
The ceremony was laid back, with Pickford, 27, wearing a baseball cap and ripped jeans, while the bride wore Givenchy studded boots and carried a Dior handbag.
Megan is said to enjoy ‘mothering’ the other wives and girlfriends and arranged a pre-match party for them ahead of England’s opening Euro game against Croatia.
Megan is thought to be particularly good friends with Harry Maguire’s girlfriend Fern Hawkins.
Fern and Harry met at the tender age of 18 and have been going strong ever since.
The couple, who have been engaged since 2018, met when he was just 18 and part of Sheffield United's youth team.
They share daughters Lillie Saint, who turned two in April, and Piper Rose, who was born in May 2020.
Phil Foden, 21, who currently sports bleached blonde cropped hair, met his girlfriend Rebecca Cooke when they were both teens.
The sweet couple had a baby boy, Ronnie, together when they were both 18 and now live in a stunning £3.25 million mansion in Prestbury, Cheshire.
Rebecca is also expecting their second child, a girl, in the late summer.
And the long term couples don’t end there.
Midfielder Kalvin Phillips, 25, has been dating Leeds University Graduate turned make-up artist Ashleigh Behan since he was 17.
And, rising star and England’s main goal scorer, Raheem Sterling, is being cheered on by fiancee Paige Milian. They have been together since Raheem, now 26, was a teenager, and they have a four-year-old son, Thiago.
Sterling also has a nine-year-old daughter, Melody Rose, from a previous relationship.
Meanwhile dependable right-back Kyle Walker, who is one of the oldest members of the squad at 31, is engaged to Annie Kilner, 28, with whom he has three sons — Riaan, Reign and Roman.
While the pair have been together for a lengthy 12-years, their particular romance hasn’t been without its bumps.
The couple split in 2019 after she discovered he had been unfaithful to her with Laura Lou Brown, 31, who has appeared on reality TV show Ex On The Beach.
Kyle then went on to father a son, Kairo, last April with model and social media personality Lauryn Goodman.
By the time baby Kairo was born, Annie and Kyle were back together and he proposed last summer.
Finally, the love life of England’s all star player Jack Grealish is also rooted in his school days too.
He’s said to have rekindled his relationship with long term girlfriend Sasha Attwood before flying out to play in the Euros.
The couple met while at school in the West Midlands and despite a brief split are thought to be back together, with friends saying she keeps his feet on the ground.
In football circles, having relationships that were built before the players became famous is said to help keep their heads out of the clouds.
Let’s hope our boys’ stint in the Euros lasts as long as these rock solid relationships and turns out to be the secret weapon to help take England to the finals.
