Line of Duty fans were left shocked on Sunday night after James Nesbitt was introduced as DCI Marcus Thurwell.

Detective Inspector Steve Arnott was seen digging on the police database when Marcus Thurwell was pictured in connection with the case regarding exploitation at Sandsview Boys’ Home.

It was then revealed that after taking an early retirement in 2015, Marcus fled the UK – but AC-12 are on the hunt to uncover his suspected links to the murder of journalist Gail Vella.

How old is James Nesbitt?

William James Nesbitt was born on January 15 1965 which makes him 56 years old.

He was taught by his father James “Jim” Nesbitt, who was a teacher, while his mother May Nesbitt was a civil servant. He has three older sisters who all became teachers.

Where is he from?

James was born in Ballymena, County Antrim, Northern Ireland.

Is he married?

James married Sonia Forbes-Adam, 56, in 1994 after first meeting on a call-back for Hamlet at Loughborough Hall in 1989.

The pair share two daughters, Peggy, 24, and Mary, 20, who also appeared in the final two Hobbit films with their dad.

Sonia and James divorced in 2016, after 22 years together.

What has he starred in?

James rose to fame in Cold Feet as Adam Williams between 1997 and 2003 before reprising the role in 2016.

The actor played undercover police officer Tommy Murphy in series Murphy’s Law between 2001 and 2007, and starred in the 2012 big screen adaptation of The Hobbit, playing Bofur alongside Martin Freeman, who took the lead as Bilbo Baggins.

TV fans may also recognise James from BBC One drama The Missing, which saw his character’s five-year-old son Oliver disappear during a family holiday.

And most recently, James played DCI Tom Brannick in BBC One series Bloodlands, which was also penned by Line Of Duty creator Jed Mercurio.

Speaking when Bloodlands was released earlier this year, James falsely claimed that he'd never been asked to do Line Of Duty – even though at the time of the interview, his scenes had already been filmed.

He told Radio Times: “I said, ‘Come on, Jed, when are we going to get a chance to work together?’

“Even though Line of Duty had been shot here for years I was never considered for it, which has always slightly galled me."

When did he receive an OBE?

James was presented with his Officer of the Order of the British Empire by the Queen in 2016.

The actor was recognised for his drama along with his services to families affected by The Troubles in Northern Ireland.

The Cold Feet star is a patron of Belfast-based WAVE Trauma Centre which provides care and support to those affected by the conflict.
