Homes that have been in the same family for decades can provide a special opportunity for buyers.

They tend to have been kept in the same family as there is something desirable about them – perhaps the location or the amount of space they offer.

They may also provide a chance to add value if buyers are able to add some modern features.

Daniel Copley, of Zoopla, said: ‘Properties that have been kept in the same family for several generations tend to be hugely sought after.

‘Often families have kept hold of properties because they are particularly special – and so they invite a lot of interest when they come to market once more.

‘In addition, properties that have been in the same family for decades can often present prime renovation opportunities – all the while benefiting from beautiful original features.’

He suggests there are unique ways of secure such properties for sale, which can be in high demand.

He said: ‘For the sellers involved, they may have an emotional attachment to the property and be keen to ensure the new buyer will look after the property.

‘Consider writing them a letter to put them at ease and share more about your hopes for your potential new home.’
