I have large breasts and need a bra for support – it’s embarrassing as I’m a man

DEAR DEIDRE: I HAVE large breasts and need a bra for support – it’s embarrassing as I’m a man and need to keep this a secret from friends and colleagues.

I work in the construction industry and would get laughed out of town if my friends knew I wear bras.

I’m 45 and my wife is 42. She knows and is fine with it.

When I go on holiday it’s great because no one knows me, so I can wear my bra without worrying what people think of me.

But when I’m at work, I feel I have to go without wearing a bra. What can I do? When I don’t wear one my back and shoulder area hurts.

DEIDRE SAYS: You have gynaecomastia – a condition where men have excess fat around the nipples. For some, this is just a little excess fat but for others this means they develop full breasts.

The good news is you have options. These range from simple hormone treatment to surgery, so you will be able to throw those bras away.

Talk to your GP, who will be able to advise you.
