DEAR DEIDRE: DURING my twenties I was so sensible and career-driven that now I feel I wasted that time of my life.
I hate the idea that my young days are now over.
When I finished school, I was so set on becoming an accountant that I jumped straight on to a course and then got a job.
I didn’t once consider that I was missing out on the university experience and travelling – or even that there were other career options.

The pandemic made me realise I was really unhappy, so I quit my job. Now I am 35, and have just started a degree in primary education.
I look at my course mates, in their 20s, who are having the time of their lives, and I feel like I wasted that decade.
DEIDRE SAYS: The saying “age is just a number” is more relevant than ever – people do what they want, when they want.
See this degree as an opportunity to try new things and meet new people.
And instead of seeing missed opportunities, think of them as boxes you’ve yet to tick on your bucket list.
