Last summer the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge moved into their stunning new Windsor home.
Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis enrolled into Lambrook School near Ascot in Berkshire after the family settled into Adelaide Cottage in the grounds of Windsor Castle.
Their new four-bedroom home is located on the 655-acre Windsor estate, close to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s UK home Frogmore Cottage and Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson’s mansion, Royal Lodge.
It was first built back in 1831 for Queen Adelaide, the wife of King William IV. It’s since had a rich and vibrant history.
In 1941, it became a ‘grace-and-favour home’ – a term used to describe houses owned by the king or queen that can be loaned out to royal family members or staff rent-free.
Many royals are granted these types of properties, including the Cambridges, because they serve the King when they attend royal engagements and duties.
One of the first new occupants of Adelaide was Peter Townsend – who was at the centre of a royal scandal when his love affair with Princess Margaret was revealed.
In 1945, the couple were expecting their second child together and the King offered them the home to stay in.
While Peter was ‘deeply grateful’, in his memoir Time and Chance, he said the home was in desperate need of renovation and even described it as an ‘ice-box’ because it had two small heaters in the entire property.
Despite its Grade-II listed status, which means there are strict limitations on how the house can be changed, it was modernised in 2015, seven years before the Cambridge's moved in in summer last year.
We’ve since had sneak peaks inside the home.
Last week, Prince William made a video call from the study of his home to service workers in Australia helping with the floods.
His backdrop was a gorgeous large dark-wooden unit which contained plenty of ornaments and sentimental china.
The cabinet was slotted into an archway in the wall which was painted in a beige colour and adorned with a framed-painting.
Old portraits of the home reveal that the outside is just as grand as the inside.
In one historic painting, the white house is surrounded by tall trees, wildflowers and a circular fountain.
We can only assume the grounds are kept as beautiful with Kate Middleton making no secret that she’s a keen gardener.
In 2019 she even decorated her own garden for the annual Chelsea Flower Show, which highlighted an important message of the physical and mental benefits being in nature can bring.
With three young children it’s safe to assume their garden is as functional as it is beautiful too.
Previous looks inside Anmer Hall showed that the family had a wendy house, seesaw and swing for the little ones to play on outside.
The stunning views over Windsor Great Park and the deer, cows and other animals living on the lane will also be spectacular – and probably quite different from the inner-city life they’ve been used to living in at Kensington Palace.
