Kate Middleton once took a really ordinary trip to Sainsbury’s to buy Halloween costumes with her children Prince George and Princess Charlotte. This was so surprising because it’s not something royal fans expect to see every day in the supermarket.
Halloween is a fun and spooky celebration that children love celebrating and dressing up for, and the royal children are likely no exception. Like most parents, the Princess of Wales is presumably trying to find the perfect costumes and face paints for Prince George, nine, Princess Charlotte, seven, and four-year-old Prince Louis.
But many royal fans probably would not expect to see Kate, 40, buying costumes in her local Sainsbury’s, as one member of the public did one time.
She was spotted in the Hardwick branch of Sainsbury’s in King’s Lynn, near Anmer Hall, back in 2020. This would have been two years before Louis was born.
Resident Kate Carter told OK Magazine back in 2020: “She was with the children, and she looked lovely. She is absolutely beautiful, and the children were beautiful. They were so well behaved.”
Prince William was similarly seen in a Tesco earlier this year in Hammersmith, West London on an official engagement. He was pictured chatting to shoppers on his 40th birthday while he stood with a Big Issue seller.
On this day the Prince of Wales sold the magazine in London, of which he posed on the cover to celebrate his birthday milestone.
Royal biographer and the Editor-in-Chief of Majesty magazine, Ingrid Seward, previously said Halloween was never considered a major event on the royal calendar and is likely still considered “more of an American celebration”.
“When the Queen’s children were young, Halloween was not the commercial institution it has become, and in the UK it went by almost unnoticed,” Seward said.
“I am sure the younger members of the Royal Family celebrate Halloween because their schools will do so anyway.”
OK magazine’s royal expert, Christina Reeves, previously claimed that, although the Royal Family “certainly don’t publicly celebrate Halloween,” Prince William and Kate “likely” throw private Halloween parties for George, Charlotte, and Louis “behind closed doors”.
Kate’s mother, Carole Middleton, even owns a party outfit business called Party Pieces, and will likely be more than happy to provide Halloween costumes for her six grandchildren, which include Pippa Middleton’s three little ones.
However, during the reign of Queen Victoria, the monarch set a strict code of conduct that the Royal Family should constantly “uphold total class and sophistication”.
This meant the Royal Family should have “complete self-respect and good behaviour when in front of the general public”, which included not dressing up for Halloween.
Of course, times have indeed changed, and speaking in 2021, Meghan Markle shared the Sussex family have previously celebrated Halloween together.
During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the Duchess of Sussex said Archie and Lilibet both dressed up for Halloween that year, as a dinosaur and a skunk, respectively.
“We wanted to do something fun for the kids, and then the kids were just not into it at all,” Meghan explained, before sharing that Archie only wore his costume for “five minutes” and likened Lilibet’s skunk costume to “Flower from Bambi”.
Before Harry and Meghan had children, they celebrated together by going to a Halloween party in Toronto, where the Duchess was filming Suits at the time.
She told Ellen DeGeneres that they, along with Harry’s cousin Princess Eugenie and her now-husband Jack Brooksbank, went out in disguise costumes before announcing they were a couple.
“The four of us snuck out in Halloween costumes to just have one fun night on the town before it was out in the world that we were a couple,” Meghan said.
Since Archie is now three years old and a preschooler, King Charles’ grandson is probably already carving pumpkins and helping to decorate his school with scary items like bats and skeletons.
