Kate Middleton paid touching tribute to both the Queen and Prince Philip at the former’s funeral Monday.

The Princess of Wales arrived at Westminster Abbey for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in a stunning black veiled hat and sentimental jewels that belonged to her grandmother-in-law, repeating the pearl-and-diamond pieces she wore to Prince Philip’s funeral in April 2021.

The princess chose the Queen’s four-row pearl choker with a diamond clasp and her Bahrain Pearl Earrings, also featuring pearls and diamonds.

The necklace was made from pearls which “were reportedly a gift from the Japanese government, possibly acquired during the 1970s, when she made a state visit to that nation,” according to The Court Jeweller.

During happier times, Middleton wore the necklace to a dinner celebrating the 70th wedding anniversary of the Queen and Prince Philip in 2017; it was also sported by Princess Diana in the 1980s.

As for the earrings, they’re a set the late queen wore many times during her reign, having been gifted the pearls for her 1947 wedding from the Hakim of Bahrain, per The Court Jeweller.

While Middleton sported the earrings at Prince Philip’s funeral, she’s also worn them on several other occasions such as Royal Ascot, Remembrance Sunday and Trooping the Colour.

The choice to don pearls for today’s funeral is steeped in history, as the gems are traditionally worn during times of mourning.

Queen Victoria famously chose pearls following the death of her beloved husband, Prince Albert, and Maxwell Stone of UK jeweler Steven Stone previously told Page Six Style that “the pearls were thought to represent tears — establishing a tradition that has lasted until the present day.”

Another tradition the Princess of Wales carried on was wearing a veil for the funeral. Sporting a wide-brimmed black hat with an elegant piece of netting, Middleton followed a custom that has been seen by many royal ladies before her.
