Kaz Kamwi reveals nifty ‘shoelace’ hack which makes baggy jeans sculpt her curves

Love Island 2021 might have taken last summer by storm with the drama but it was also one of, if not the most, fashionable series of the hit reality show.

One lady that was constantly upping the style stakes is Kaz Kamwi, who inspired thousands of viewers to snap up her looks straight after wearing them on the show.

From must-have bikinis to the perfect evening looks, there was nothing that the 27 year old couldn't pull off. Now, six months since leaving the villa, OK! sat down with the star to discuss all things style, what she's been up to recently and her genius fashion hack…

Did you realise how much of a style influencer you had become on Love Island?

Not whilst I was there. Before going in, I thought I would only be there for two weeks but I was like, 'Listen if I’m going to be there for two weeks I want to have enough outfits [so] if I have a day where I’m trying to get ready and I think 'I don’t like this' then I need to have 10 options just in case.' Every day, I would try something on and say 'Am I in the mood for you or not?' so that’s why I packed so much.

I was doing influencing before the show and my wardrobe is quite big so I thought that I have so many clothes to take with me so I took all of it. But I didn’t really think too much about it so when I came out and saw I was like 'Yay!' because I love fashion.

Do you have a favourite outfit from the show?

I loved my entry bikini because that was just a three-piece. It was the first day and I remember thinking 'I love this outfit' and I felt good.

I wore a dress from Farai London which I absolutely loved because it was fitted, and I love backless styles. Most of all, I also think any time I wore red, because I think it’s very sassy.

Did you feel pressure to look good whilst in the villa?

"I think there was a pressure as we were in bikinis all day and mine were very cheeky and revealing but that’s my bikini style. So it’s always being conscious of making sure everything is tucked in and nothings going to go anywhere.

It was very similar when it came to evening outfits because to be honest, I didn’t carry any boob tape with me, so shout out to Faye [Winter] for saving me. I was very aware of having potential nip slips and things not fitting as they should. When I’m comfortable I’m great, so if I wore things that I wasn’t necessarily comfortable in I had to change."

What is your go to fashion hack?

My waist is smaller than my hips and thighs, so sometimes I’ll get my pair of jeans in a size up. This means they’ll go over my thighs but them the waist it just hanging with a massive gap, so I use the shoelace method.

So you carve out a small hole in the inside of your jeans in the seam and you feel a shoelace through and tie it together underneath so it’s hidden and it cinches your waist in. No one will know and I do it to so many of my jeans, it’s a lifesaver.

Who do you still talk to from the show?

Liberty a lot, Faye, Sharon, Abbie, Aaron, Brett. We try the best we can to meet up but sometimes we’ll make a plan and half of us will be like, 'We can’t make that day anymore.'

But we keep on top of our relationships with communication. And I think the main thing is making time and setting time aside to just have a quick phone call chat with no distractions goes a long way.

How often do you get brands messaging you for collaborations?

I get quite a few direct messages on social media but for me, it’s about who I want to work with and if something comes along that I’m really interested in then I’ll send it to my team and we’ll get something in place. I just like to make sure I’m picking what’s right for me.

Is there a brand you’d really like to work with?

There are so many. I’m working with all my dream brands now and I absolutely adore them and I think moving forward I’d like to tap into high fashion as it could be a nice experiment. At the moment I’m living my dream.

I have so many things on my wish list and I think it’s time to now go ahead and do it. I’m a self-proclaimed lady of leisure so when it comes to high end designers I just think why not? Dior is my absolute dream high end brand to work with.

How would you describe your style?

It’s very soft but it’s got rough edges to it. I have two styles, I don’t think many people know this, but in summer I like to play with colours with colour blocking and experimenting with pastels. Whereas in winter I tend to be more neutral and very dark – I like to wear a lot of black in winter.

I’m a jeans girl and I think a lot of people see me in dresses most of the time but on a day to day I’m literally in jeans, heels, crop top or bodysuit. So I think it’s very experimental and depends on my mood.

How do you find the process of getting ready for red carpet events?

I’ve learned that it takes a village and I’m so particular [but] I can’t do it all by myself. I’m such a control freak, so it made me realise that if I ask for help, I ask a bit too late. I’m so lucky to work with an amazing stylist and everything’s come together based off of that.

I like to have themes for each different carpet, with Pride of Britain, I really wanted to be very sexy but sophisticated. Where as at ITV Palooza, I wanted to be more fun but different and I had my hair in a fringe which I’ve never had in my entire life. I absolutely loved having it and I felt like I was not longer Kaz, I was Kazalicious or someone – I felt so good that night.

I’ve realised that I love a thigh high split and every single dress that I’ve worn has one. So maybe next time I’ll try something different. For someone who once didn’t like their legs, I sure do love them out now. My whole team always comes together and understands what I want and the assignment.

What is the one piece of style advice you would give someone?

Comfort first. When I’ve worn outfits that require me to fidget around, I don’t enjoy my night. I’ve gone to the shop in oversize tracksuit bottoms that I have to keep rolling them or I’ve not worn in heels so my feet were burning all night. Not every outfit is easy to do that with but there’s ways and hacks around it.
