Long-Covid has ruined my sex life and now I can't keep it up

DEAR DEIDRE: SINCE I had Covid last year, I can’t perform in the bedroom and I’m worried the virus has ruined my erections.

I am 52 and was in hospital for a week when the coronavirus took hold of me. Thank goodness the NHS worked its magic and I recovered.

But I’ve been left with long-Covid. I feel tired constantly.

During the night I get weak erections but no longer manage them when I want to have sex with my wife.

She is 54 and says it’s not a problem, although it is for me. Sometimes I get one but it soon disappears.

We’ve been married for 15 years and have two grown-up kids.

I used to have a regular sex life before the pandemic and enjoyed getting intimate most nights. Now it’s once a month if I’m lucky.

I’m fed-up. Will my GP be able to help?

DEIDRE SAYS: Yes. Research is continuing into the coronavirus and the after-effects of long-Covid. There is some evidence men can suffer erectile dysfunction after catching the virus.

Talk to your GP about a referral to a urologist. You can try to help yourself too by exercising, eating a healthy diet and losing some pounds if you need to, as well as making lifestyle changes such as cutting down on smoking and alcohol.

If intercourse is too challenging, you and your wife can enjoy some intimacy through massage.
