Cleaning sensation Lynsey Crombie has detailed her harrowing experience after learning her first husband was a child sex offender – revealing six out of eight women she met during this time said they’d be staying with their paedophile partners.
Lynsey, 41, better known as the Queen of Clean who boasts 225,000 Instagram followers, was left shocked by the mothers’ admissions when attending a child protection course with other women whose partners were paedophiles.
It came after the British TV and social media star’s first husband, and father to her twins, was arrested and charged with paedophilia, which led to her becoming a compulsive cleaner as a way of coping with the trauma.
Speaking on the podcast Life, Interrupted, hosted by Simon Thomas, Lynsey recalled the alarming moment other mothers confessed they would be staying with their criminal lovers.
In comparison, Lynsey has previously said she doesn’t know what happened to her ex-husband following his arrest – having only heard from him once, in a letter from Durham Prison.

‘Child protection were straight on me instantly,’ she recalled, following her first husband’s arrest. ‘I had to go on a course with other women in a similar situation at a woman’s centre.
‘There were eight ladies and they said you need to go on this course, you need to learn about how to protect your children.
‘So I remember going on the course and there were eight of us in the room and we all had to sit in a circle and tell everybody what’s going on. It was awful. I was the youngest in this room, it was just the worst thing ever.
‘And out of the eight people – this still surprises me to this day – six of them stayed with their partners and wanted to work with them.
‘These men have done worse things and I remember just being totally shocked and I didn’t want to be in that room with those sorts of people,’ she added.
Lynsey – who first came to fame throwing hoarders’ junk into skips on Channel 4’s Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners – enjoys regular appearances on ITV’s This Morning and has two books to her name, as well as a third to be released later this month.

But her passion for cleanliness started after a horrific time in her life – when, 18 years ago, she discovered that her new husband was a paedophile.
The trauma sent her into premature labour with the twins she was carrying and overnight, she became a single mother with two babies in a special-care unit.
Lynsey, who was 25 at the time, had known her first husband, who she won’t name and was seven years older, for just over a year. They’d met while living in Kingston, Surrey.
‘When I look back, he was quite secretive. He was quite aggressive, he used to shout at me a lot. I remember neighbours saying to me that they’d heard us arguing and it was because he wasn’t very nice to me’, admitted Lynsey.
‘But I think I was very much taken in by him. I used to suddenly just wake up in the middle of the night, two or three in the morning, and he wasn’t in bed.
While Lynsey (pictured) has now made a career out of her passion for cleaning, the influencer admitted that her obsession with housework was ‘not normal behaviour’ following her ordeal
‘I used to go into the office and he used to always pull the plug out of the wall where the computer was. So rather than just closing the laptop down or letting me see the screen, he’d actually pull the plug out of the wall.
‘And it’s only when I look back – and I spotted this three or four times in the relationship – I think “what was he doing on the computer to actually physically pull it out of the wall?”’
Recalling her first husband’s arrest, Lynsey said: ‘I remember saying to [the police officers], “what’s going on?” They said to me, “we’re not allowed to tell you” – this is so vivid in my mind.
‘He didn’t say, I kept saying to him, “what have you done?” They took him, put him in the car and they said to me “someone will be in touch with you later”. They refused to tell me what he had actually done.
‘After they’d gone, I remember calling his mother, they lived in the next village along. And her words were “oh no, he’s done it again” and she put the phone down on me.
‘I was 28 weeks pregnant. I remember saying “I can’t have his children, what do I do?” I just didn’t know what to do,’ she added.
While Lynsey has now made a career out of her passion for cleaning, the influencer admitted that her obsession with housework was ‘not normal behaviour’ following her ordeal.
Lynsey said: ‘It was a complete and utter obsession with me. It was a constant need to clean. I constantly had a mop or a broom or something in my hand, and I think it was just like I was washing away the dirt, washing away the pain.
‘That’s that’s how I looked at it. It was uncontrollable, it was completely out of control. The smell of bleach…the headaches I used to get. It was totally out of control, it was not normal behaviour.’
Lynsey, who is now married to second husband Rob, with whom she has a son with, is releasing a new book, 15-Minute Clean, designed to highlight not only the benefits of cleaning but its therapeutic and enjoyable aspects.
