This panda’s frisky mate was bamboo-zled.

Pandas at a Denmark zoo might have proven why the species is endangered after a male opted to munch on bamboo instead of making whoopie with his mate.

“How is the pandas’ attempt at natural mating progressing on day two, you ask?” reads the snarky caption to Instagram footage of the sex snub, which was filmed last month at Copenhagen Zoo. The facility had reportedly been excited to finally pair the pandas, which only “meet to mate once a year,” a zoo spokesperson told Jam Press.

The series of clips starts off promisingly with the frisky female, Mao Sun, crouching on all fours and waiting seductively against her prospective lover in a bid to get him in the mood.

Unfortunately, the male, Xing Er, ignores her advances, instead opting to lounge on the ground and munch on a stick of bamboo while giving her a cold shoulder. From there, the oblivious critter proceeds to devour the plants as his seemingly bewildered date smooshes her bottom against him in vain.

Just when all seems lost, the camera cuts to the munchie-addled male appearing to make a pass at his spurned mate in another part of the enclosure. However, he then leaps away at the last second, torpedoing any hope of hanky-panky.

It’s unclear why the clip didn’t end with a bang. However, the zoo spokesperson chalked it up to the fact that while Mao was in heat, her snack-savoring soulmate “might be too young still to know what to do.”

Unfortunately, the lovebirds might’ve missed the window for whoopie as the female panda is only in heat for between 12 and 36 hours, after which the animals are separated again.

“Pandas live by themselves most of the time,” the spokesperson said.

Needless to say, Instagram had a field day with the panda’s backfired boudoir session.

“It is no wonder that they are endangered,” joked one gawker, while another advised, “Maybe you should put them together somewhere without bamboo.”
