Meghan Markle has praised the ‘incredible’ achievements of the women behind a Grenfell community kitchen as she enjoyed a phone call with them from her $14million Santa Barbara home.

The Duchess of Sussex, 40, who gave birth to her daughter Lilibet in June, chatted to those who created the Hubb community kitchen in west London following the Grenfell fire, reported The Evening Standard.

Long-supported by the Sussexes, the initiative was set up to provide support and hot meals for bereaved families following the Grenfell blaze, which killed 72 people on June 14, 2017.

Calling from her California mansion, which she shares with her daughter, son Archie, two, and her husband Prince Harry, Meghan said she was ‘most proud’ of the women for continuing ‘to take care of everyone in the community’.

Meghan, who has repeatedly checked in with the community endeavour, developed a close relationship with the Hubb community kitchen after the release of her 2018 charity cookbook Together, which marked her first solo venture as a royal.

The people behind the initiative had met for a celebratory lunch at the Al-Manaar centre in north Kensington.

In her call, Meghan said: ‘We founded Hubb together and I think what I’m most proud of is what you’ve all been able to do, not just what we created to meet an immediate need right after the fire.

The duchess, who has previously visited the community kitchen, added: ‘… Beyond that, what you turned it into as a group and individually is incredible, you’ve just continued to take care of everyone in the community.’

One of the Hubb volunteers, Chérine Mallah, told the publication that it was ‘lovely’ for Meghan to praise their work and that they were ‘really happy’ to get the call from her.

‘It is massive for us. The next days of our lives are just the same but we know that someone as famous as Meghan is backing us. It is really lovely,’ said Chérine.

In April 2020, Meghan took part in a call with several members of the group to discuss how their work can be adapted during the lockdowns.

The kitchen was set up by Grenfell survivors at Al Manaar mosque following the blaze at the 24-storey flat, which turned into the most deadly domestic fire since the Second World War.

Meanwhile, yesterday Meghan cut a chic figure in a blue shirt and jeans as she appeared on a children’s YouTube channel to read her book The Bench.

The Duchess of Sussex swept her hair into a slick bun and heaped on the jewellery for the the video, in which she could be seen reclining on a seat in the garden of her $14million mansion in Santa Barbara.

The video was shared on the Brightly Storytime channel, which is run by Penguin Random House, the publishing house which published The Bench and with which Prince Harry also has a book deal.

Before she began reading, she explained: ‘Today I’m going to be read to you my book called The Bench with illustrator Christian Robinson…I asked him to do something special for me and use watercolours, which isn’t the normal medium he works in but he did it to make it extra special.

‘I wrote this as a poem for my husband and our son Archie, and then turned it into a book so you could enjoy it too.’

At the end of the clip, the Duchess can be seen closing the book, explaining: ‘I hope you enjoyed The Bench, I loved being able to share it with you.

‘And now I hope you’re able to go and find your own special bench, or chair, or little quiet nook.

‘Just a place that means something to you that you can share with someone you love. Have a great day and come back to Brightly Storytime soon. Bye!’

The Bench was inspired by a poem the Duchess of Sussex wrote for Prince Harry on Father’s Day, the month after Archie was born, and explores the ‘special bond between father and son’ as ‘seen through a mother’s eyes’.
