Morrisons is making huge changes to its More loyalty programme from next week. The scheme’s new updates will see customers being given digital-only offers through the supermarket’s app.

Morrison’s current loyalty scheme allows customers to collect points on their Morrisons More card, which they can then use to get money off supermarket products.

However, the supermarket’s programme is changing from next Monday, 10 May, as its points system will be scrapped.

This means that customers will no longer be able to collect points via the More card.

Morrisons will stop producing the cards in a bid to cut down on plastic and be more environmentally aware.

From next week, customers will have to download the Morrisons app, with all offers and discounts given to customers digitally.

Under the current loyalty programme, customers get five points for every £1 they spend in store or online at Morrisons.

Five thousand points are worth a £5 voucher which can be redeemed on groceries and other supermarket products.

However, with the points system being scrapped on 10 May, the final day for customers to collect points is 9 May.

Morrisons’ new loyalty scheme will see customers being offered digital coupons via the supermarket’s app, instead of collecting points.

The food retailer said that these rewards will be personalised, and all customers need to do to redeem them is to scan their app at the checkout.

Customers who currently have points on their cards can still use them after 10 May, but they will only remain valid until 9 August.

Shoppers must request their £5 vouchers via the Morrisons app or their online account so that they can be printed.

Meanwhile, customers who already have their vouchers set to print will receive them when they next present their More card in store.

Customers who have a balance of more than 5,000 points will see their remaining points become void as they do not hold any monetary value, so shoppers are not losing any money by transitioning to the new Morrisons scheme.

However, despite this, many customers are continuing to take to social media to express their anger and confusion about the new scheme.

One Twitter user said: “Dear @Morrisons, why are you voiding all accumulated points when you terminate the More Card scheme next week? This seems unreasonable.”

Another customer wrote: “Morrisons More card is changing next week and shoppers won’t be able to collect points. Just means they control your buy! I don’t care for using apps, so I probably won’t bother anymore.”

One customer joked: “Pretty pointless then.”

Some shoppers even claimed that they will now be boycotting Morrisons.

One customer said: “I’ve only recently switched to Morrison’s online and already the 10 percent NHS discount has gone from online…… guess I may be switching to another supermarket!”

Another added: “Well I’m elderly and don’t have a phone so I won’t be shopping at Morrisons any more disgraceful treatment of shoppers.”

Express.co.uk readers have also contributed to the debate, with many unhappy with the new changes.

One reader said: “Looks like will shop and get my petrol elsewhere, not everyone likes or can download ‘Apps’.”

Another person wrote: “Discrimination against those who are unable to use technology.”

“Sainsbury’s here I come,” another reader said.

One person added: “Morrisons were a great company years ago but they have become very greedy.”

In a statement outlining the changes to its scheme, Morrisons said: “With Morrisons More, we are always listening to our valued customers, taking feedback on how we can improve the experience.

“What we’ve heard is that you’d like your rewards to be immediate, including discounts and money off your next shop. We also learned that you want to give back to your local community and to support environmental causes by going paper and plastic free wherever possible.

“So that’s what we’ve done. From the 10th May you’ll enjoy instant discounts and money-off offers rather than points.

“Don’t worry you will still be able to scan your physical More card at the checkout, so we can tailor your promotions to you, however to take part in the promotions you will need to use your More App on your mobile phone or create an online account.

“Don’t worry if you don’t have a smartphone we will send you an email with your weekly offers, you can then login to your online account and activate the offers you like, these offers will be loaded directly to your card. So all you need to do in store is swipe your card.”
