Bridgwater on the M5 in Somerset was awarded just one star out of five for all categories in a survey for consumer group Which. Ken McMeikan, chief executive of owners Moto, was disappointed at the ratings and comments, with one insisting it “should be demolished”. He said:“I’m appalled by the score at our Bridgwater site.

“This does not reflect the standards we aspire to across our sites and I can guarantee all issues raised will be dealt with to ensure we get Bridgwater
back to the standard we know our customers expect and deserve.”

The service stations were rated for cleanliness, range of facilities and prices. Bridgwater received an overall customer score of just 32 percent.

Visitors said it was dirty and depressing while others said they could smell urine and saw toilet paper on the floor.

Bridgwater’s location makes it a rest-stop for tourists heading to and from Devon and Cornwall. But just an hour’s drive away – at the other end of the scale – Gloucester services was ranked No 1. The Westmorland-run venue got four out of five stars in all categories in an 86 percent total.

One visitor said it was “as far from a typical motorway stop as you can imagine”, with customers praising its “fabulous” farm shop selling home-cooked meals and local produce.

Tebay on the M6 in Cumbria was second with 83 percent followed by Cairn Lodge on the M74 in Lanark and Norton Canes on the M6 Toll in Staffordshire. Findings were based on around 5,600 experiences by 2,700 consumers at 68 service areas.

Rory Boland, editor of Which? Travel magazine, said: “Make sure your journey isn’t spoiled by a stop at a shoddy service station.
