My colleague is so lazy that I'm considering quitting to get away from her

DEAR DEIDRE: MY work colleague is so lazy that I reported her to management but nothing was done.

I think it’s because of nepotism. Her mum works for the company and there is a culture of hiring friends and relatives.

She’s 18 and is really immature.

She does the bare minimum and spends most of each day on her phone, ignoring customers in the shop where we work.

I work hard but am always having to cover for her and do her job as well as my own.

I am 30 and really fed up. I like my job and want to keep it but am starting to dread going in every morning knowing she will be there.

But I think they will all know it’s me and feel I’m being passive-aggressive.

DEIDRE SAYS: It can be very frustrating when someone doesn’t pull their weight.

If your manager will not do anything, you should contact someone more senior, or HR. Explain to them this is affecting your attitude to work.

Acas (acas.org.uk) might be able to advise you.

Rather than leaving anonymous feedback, it might be better to take a friendly approach with her. Perhaps offer to mentor her and help her with the job.
