My daughter has shunned me in favour of my manipulative mother

DEAR DEIDRE: WHEN I was a child, my mother was manipulative, cruel and sometimes violent towards me.

Now I am heartbroken as my daughter has turned to her for support and shut me out.

My mum wouldn’t let me see my dad after he left when I was ten.

I had to wait until I was an adult to resume my relationship with him.

She told me he left because he was unfaithful but I learned later the opposite was true.

I was determined to be a better parent and was proud of the way my daughter, 18, and son, 17, turned out.

But when I had a recent fallout with my daughter, she went to my mother’s who I’ve not spoken to for ten years.

It’s one month on now and I know my mum is filling my gorgeous daughter’s head with lies.

I’m worried I’ll never see her again.

DEIDRE SAYS: If your daughter won’t speak to you, write her a letter to say you love her and you will always be there for her.

Don’t get sucked into bad-mouthing your mother – keep your dignity and in time your daughter will start to see her for what she is.

Your daughter must know how much it would hurt you going to your mum’s so she was clearly angry with you.

The most important thing is to keep the lines of communication open.

I’m sure your daughter will come back soon.
