On the social media platform Reddit, people take to the forum ‘AmITheA******’ to ask if they are morally wrong in a certain situation. One woman has gone viral on the site with thousands of views after she told the “bonkers” tale of her mother’s suggestion she pretends to be her identical twin sister “Jess” for her wedding day after the bride had gotten into a horrific accident.

A 30-year-old woman has shocked the internet after she claimed she was being pressured by her family to pretend to be her twin sister on her wedding day after the sister got into an accident.

The woman told the story of her childhood for context and wrote about the complex relationship she had with her identical twin sister, Jess. She wrote: “Jess and I look so much alike it can be freaky. At one point when we were still infants they had to draw a little dot at the bottom of one of our feet just so they could keep track of who was who for medical reasons. “

She continued to write that her mum “adored” having baby girl twins, and treated the pair like “precious dolls” but things became more complicated as the pair got older.

The woman wrote that her mother expected the twins to do everything together, and that quickly became only being allowed to do things Jess was interested in. She wrote: “At first I didn’t mind it at all because, well, it was my normal and I do genuinely love my sister but when we started getting older and I developed my own interests I would get so frustrated or upset.”

Jess was the “more extroverted” twin who liked parties and sports, while the woman posting said she was “introverted and artistic”. She wrote: “I was always made to do what Jess wanted to do because me not wanting to be so social was seen as ‘bad’ and the only way that Jess would agree to do/endure my hobbies was if I did her homework or chores.”

The woman detailed how when the pair were older, their parents got divorced. She was “over the moon” at being allowed to live with her father, but both her mother and Jess were not happy about her wanting to live a separate life from them. She wrote: “My mom cried when I had to tell her I didn’t want to live with her and Jess accused me of hating them.”

However, the woman was able to move with her dad to another state during her senior year of high school, and never regretted her choice, but she was never as close with her twin sister after that.

Fast forward to adulthood, and Jess is currently engaged to her boyfriend Steve and is expected to have her wedding in spring this year. However, Jess has recently gotten into a “bad accident” and will now need cosmetic surgery on her face.

The woman wrote: “[Jess] has been crying on and off for days over this because there’s no way she’ll be healed up in time for the wedding. My mom, Steve, and I have been trying to console her but it’s not enough.”

However, the woman’s mother approached her this week and suggested that the woman dress up as Jess in her bridal gown for the wedding and pretend to be her throughout the ceremony and reputation in order for the wedding photos to look nice.

The woman has written she was “floored” by the suggestion and feels “uncomfortable” but desperately does not want to let down her sister. She said he hesitantly said ‘no’ to her mother, but her mother has said Jess will be reminded of her trauma whenever she thinks of her wedding if she does not agree to dress up as a bride.

The woman asked Reddit if she was in the wrong for refusing to pretend to be her twin sister, and the internet forum was shocked that her mother even suggested such a thing. One popular comment said: “I can see why dad divorced mom” while somebody else wrote: “Some people should not be parents. Yikes, that is a mother who thinks her children are interchangeable.”

The overwhelming majority of people advised the woman to firmly refuse her mother. After a few days, the woman updated her post and said: “Thanks for all your advice and suggestions as well as affirmation that I have the right to say ‘no.’ Still dealing with residual guilt about refusing to do things for my mom.”

The woman ended up reaching out to her twin sister’s fiance, Steve and suggested photoshop would be the solution to the dilemma. However, she found out that the couple have decided to postpone the wedding as Jess was dealing with PTSD from the accident, and the woman also revealed that Jess has no idea about her mother’s strange suggestion.

In her final update to the post, the woman wrote: “For the sake of peace and Jess’ mental health I’ve decided to keep what my mom said about using me as a replacement for the wedding photos to myself for now. Jess is really going through a lot and I feel like this would be like rubbing salt in the wound.”

There have been no updates to the post since last week, so it seems the woman and Jess have solved the wedding issue, but people in the comment section were extremely shocked at the mother’s behaviour.  One commentator said: “Woof. Mom never grew out of seeing her daughters as cute little dollies to dress up.” while another popular comment said: “That is messed up on so many levels.”

Another commentator said: “Holy bejeezus. Poor twin was just being asked to be a prop model” and another person said: “So mom really thought it was a good idea for Jess to be a guest at her own wedding just because of the damned photos?”

Somebody else wrote: “That mother is bonkers. It’s so inappropriate and borderline illegal.”
