Neighbours final episode attracts biggest Australian audience in over 13 years

While the final ever episode of Neighbours will air in the UK tonight, over in Australia – they’ve already said goodbye.

As expected, it was a monumental occasion, and it’s now been confirmed the finale attracted the biggest Australian audience in well over 13 years.

According to TV Tonight, a massive 837,000 people tuned in across the country, with the Herald Sun reporting the emotional episode averaged at 1.2 million nationally and peaked at 1.41 million.

The Neighbours finale was the most-watched program that evening, winning demographics between 16 and 54.

Also last night, fans of all ages united at Federation Square in Melbourne on Thursday (July 28) to say goodbye to Ramsay Street forever.

Quotes from audience members, describing what Neighbours meant to them, appeared on screens, while some in attendance had cardboard cutouts of characters such as Paul Robinson and Karl Kennedy.

Channel 5 is removing Neighbours from schedules in order to focus on creating and airing dramas made in the UK.

Fremantle Media – the production company who made the show – attempted to find another home for it but was not successful.

In the UK, fans will be able to watch the antepenultimate episode in the usual slots of 1:45pm and 6pm tonight on Channel 5, with the history-making final episode airing at 9pm.
