Barbecues are a quintessential part of summer. England has now taken steps towards normality, including enabling groups of up to 30 people to gather in outdoor spaces – meaning a large barbecue with your closest friends and family could be on the cards as soon as the weather clears up. But cleaning your grill can prove to be the most aggravating part of a fun barbecue.

How to clean your grill

Baking soda

Baking soda is a highly versatile cleaning solution which can be used around your home.

You should sprinkle baking soda onto your grill and then dissolve some in some water.

Use a sponge with scourer on it to scrub it clean until all the baking soda has disappeared.

Steam clean

If you have been using your barbecue for the day, once it has started to cool down, cover the grill with some water-soaked newspaper.

Leave the newspaper in place for 30 minutes and close the lid of your barbecue to enable a steam cleaning.

If this method does not work, you can also fill a metal tin with water and then boil it on your hot grill to release enough steam to help shift the remaining food debris.

Dishwasher

Most small and medium barbecues can be disassembled and placed into your dishwasher.

If you opt for a pot wash cycle these hotplates should come out clean.

Vinegar

Vinegar is an effective cleaning agent and to use this technique you should mix 500ml with the same amount of water in a spray bottle.

Spray this solution onto the grill and leave it to soak in for 10 minutes.

Empty your bottle and then refill it with vinegar and spray it on before scrubbing the grill and its interior.

Beer

While your grill is still warm, but not overly hot, you can pour half a bottle of beer onto your grill to clean it.

Once the beer has been deposited, scrub at it with some newspaper or a wire brush.

After a bit of scrubbing, your grill should be nice and clean.

Onion

Onions make many cry when they start to chop them, but they can also work in your favour when it comes to a dirty grill.

Attach an onion to a fork and rub it across the hot bars of your barbecue.

The water in the onion will help to steam clean it and remove any stuck-on residue.

Hot water and foil

This method involves a lot of effort but can prove very effective.

Scrub your grill with hot, soapy water to remove the residue.

If you do not have a designated barbecue grill brush, you can scrunch up some foil to create a tool to clean the grill with.

Coffee

Removable elements from your grill can be soaked in coffee to help shift hard-to-remove food remains.

The acid in coffee works to loosen up this dirt.

Dispose of oil and grease

One of the side effects of cooking on a grill is that fats, oils and grease may build up.

You should make sure to allow them to cool in a container or in a newspaper before you throw them away.

Avoid pouring these down your drain because it will stick to the inside of your pipes and eventually cause a blockage.
