An Australian plant enthusiast has confused thousands online after he cut an avocado the ‘wrong’ way in a TikTok video.

While most people cut the fruit by slicing parallel on each side of the seed, Brad Canning, from Melbourne, placed the avocado horizontally and sliced it vertically down the centre.

He then twisted each side in the opposite direction and proceeded to use a fork to remove the seed – which triggered TikTok users further.

Despite the unexpected reaction from others, the video has since gone viral and been viewed more than 8.5 million times with 1.3 million ‘likes’ from people around the world.

Brad is known online for using avocado seeds to grow stunning house plants in glass jars, and in the video he demonstrates the method to ensure the pip grows before it’s placed in water.

Hundreds online agreed the ‘right’ way to cut an avocado is vertically in line with the fruit, and the most efficient way to remove the seed is with a sharp knife to reduce waste.

‘Buddy, just tap a sharp knife onto the pip and twist so you don’t have to mangle that poor avocado with a fork,’ one TikTok user wrote.

‘I’m pretty sure you made a mistake cutting the avocado,’ another said.

A third added: ‘My guy…look at the emoji for the correct way to open it – lengthwise.’

While Brad received backlash over how he cut the fruit, others said they slice avocados this way regularly.

Although the plants grown from the seeds won’t grow any avocados, they look stunning in the home and grow tall with large gorgeous leaves.

To grow the plants, the skin of the avocado seeds needs to be washed under running water and removed.

To allow the seed to germinate and grow a root, Brad wet a paper towel to wrap the seed in and placed it in a Ziplock bag to boost the humidity.

It’s important to make sure only the roots or half the seed is placed in water – Brad accomplished this by using a vase that’s roughly the same diameter as the seed

After two to three weeks in Ziplock bags, the seeds will crack and a root will become exposed.

‘Put the root in water and it will start to sprout … be careful though, this it a total addiction,’ Brad said in another TikTok video.
