Holly Madison says life inside the Playboy Mansion was nowhere near as glamorous as it looked from the outside.

The 41-year-old, who is originally from Oregon, went on the Call Her Daddy podcast to share her experiences.

In an interview with host Alex Cooper, she described her time living in the iconic property between 2001 and 2009.

While Holly appeared to be living the high life as one of Hugh Hefner’s “main girlfriends”, her reality was much darker.

In the “cult-like” environment, she claims she had to follow strict rules and partake in seedy group sex sessions.

Here are the former Playboy bunny’s most shocking confessions…

Holly was sleeping on a friend’s couch in Los Angeles when she was first drawn to the famous mansion.

She juggled jobs as a Hooters waitress and promo model before being invited to her first Playboy party.

The former Bunny said: “My roommates had all given up on LA and had moved back home, my credit was shot to hell because I wasn’t very careful with my credit cards.

“I was kind of in this desperate place of sleeping on somebody’s house and I’d been going to these parties at the Playboy Mansion.

“I saw the community there and it all seems very nice on the outside – all his friends love him and talk him up and he seems like such a nice person.”

Some of Hef’s girlfriends invited Holly on a night out and she enjoyed mingling with celebrities, bunnies and cover stars.

She then became a regular part of the Playboy entourage – and eventually asked if it would be possible to move in.

Before she was offered a room, 20-year-old socialite slept with Hefner.

Then when she moved in, the pressure to have sex intensified.

Before being led into the old magazine mogul's bedroom, Holly says she was offered drugs that were referred to as “thigh openers”.

Holly recalled: “His room used to be like a hell-hole with stacks and stacks of video tapes”.

While the Bunny declined hard drugs, she admits she was “always wasted” on booze and cannabis when she had group sex with Hefner.

In bi-weekly orgies where all “girlfriends” were urged to participate, two screens played porn films in the background as the Playboy businessman was pleasured.

Holly admits she felt a lot of “shame” about partaking but “internalised” her feelings in order to survive.

Seeing as she’d only had “boring, basic sex” until moving in, the experiences made her feel “out of control”.

Holly learned to cope in the disturbing environment, which she says felt like a "life sentence" with “cultish” rules.

She claims “girlfriends” of the mansion had to stick to a strict 9pm curfew.

They were given $1,000 (around £725) to spend on clothes per week – but apparently had this income reduced if managers got wind they were saving too much.

Holly wasn’t permitted to date anyone else and was offered free plastic surgery so she could tailor herself to Hefner’s tastes.

Then if the rules weren’t enough to make life difficult, she had to cope with backstabbing bunnies who were desperate to get their time in the spotlight.

Holly nearly reached her breaking point two years after moving into the mansion.

She said: “After being there for a couple of years, I realised I’d developed a stammer when I tried to speak.

“My brain felt slower and I struggled to think of certain things.

“I think it was part of being nervous, doubting myself and being in an environment where I was always drinking and my mind wasn’t being stimulated…

“You’re only valued for your looks and expected to party all the time.”

The thought of leaving felt “very scary” to Holly, who saw a psychiatrist and was put on anti-depressants.

She signed up to Playboy TV show The Girls Next Door, which threw her into the spotlight.

But behind the wide smile and fun-loving attitude she showed on screen, she battled suicidal thoughts.

While Holly didn’t make money from the show initially, she was eventually able to make some savings.

As some other “girlfriends” left the mansion and Hefner started “lashing out”, the Girls Next Door star decided it was time to cut ties too.

She had greater financial security and dreams of starting a family, which ultimately helped her to make the decision.

Holly said: “(I decided) over the course of a few months because I had a lot of guilt.

“I felt like I had made a commitment to be with him and we’d talked about being with him for the rest of his life.

“When I realised I wasn’t going to be able to have kids with him, that was a big thing.

“I was sad about it and then the depression came back.”

Finally breaking free from Hefner’s spell, Holly became successful in her own right.

She appeared on popular reality TV show Dancing with the Stars before landing a role in burlesque show Peepshow in Las Vegas.

Holly is also a New York Times Best Selling Author.

Her book, Down the Rabbit Hole: Curious Adventures and Cautionary Tales of a Former Playboy Bunny, details her life experiences and time in the famous mansion.
