Prince Harry’s life has changed drastically in the past year. When he and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex announced that they were stepping away from their roles as working royals, people were confused as to how that would work. When he was a working royal, there were a lot of things Prince Harry was not allowed to do. Now, Harry has gotten to experience a freedom that he never had while working for his grandmother. In a recent interview on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Harry revealed one of the things he was never allowed to do as a royal.
Harry and Meghan step down
In Jan. 2020, Harry and Meghan announced that they wanted to carve out a new future for themselves, one where they could be financially independent from the crown but still live a life of public service. Eventually, they were able to come to an agreement with the queen, though it did ultimately mean that the two lost their royal patronages.
“Following many months of conversations and more recent discussions, I am pleased that together we have found a constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family,” Queen Elizabeth II said in a statement.
“Harry, Meghan, and Archie will always be much loved members of my family,” she continued. “I recognise the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life.”
Despite not being able to officially represent his grandmother anymore or use his His Royal Highness title, Prince Harry told Corden that he never planned on walking away from the royal family and will never do so.
“It was never walking away; it was stepping back rather than stepping down. You know, it was a really difficult environment, as I think a lot of people saw. We all know what the British press can be like, and it was destroying my mental health. I was like, this is toxic. So I did what any husband and what any father would do. It’s like, I need to get my family out of here. But we never walked away, and as far as I’m concerned, whatever decisions are made on that side, I will never walk away. I will always be contributing. My life is public service, so wherever I am in the world, it’s going to be the same thing.”
What was Harry never allowed to do?
When Harry was working as a member of the royal family, there were a lot of rules that he and his brother Prince William had to follow. Some of the rules are well-known, like having to get approval before proposing or standing when the queen stands, but others are more subtle.
Part of Harry’s interview with Corden took place on a double decker sight-seeing bus. Though there are plenty of those buses in London, Harry had never been on one before.
“First time being on an open top bus,” Harry told Corden.
When Corden asked if he was being serious, Harry revealed that he wasn’t really allowed to go on sightseeing buses.
“In London, I always see them around cruising, and I was like ‘You know that would be really good fun’ because when you live in an area, you never actually go sightseeing. I’ve always wanted to go sightseeing.”
