Queen Letizia and King Felipe VI are parents of two daughters, Princess Leonor, 15, and Princess Sofia, 14. Meanwhile, the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William are parents of three young children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
Body language expert Judi James said that although both royals’ approaches “are conditioned by having all eyes on them- and on their parenting style”, many differences can be spotted.
Queen Letizia always looks secure, calm but also firm and protective every time she is seen out with her daughters.
The Spanish monarch allows them space and tends to avoid physical contact or loving gestures during official appearances.
Kate, on the other hand, has a more tactile and loving approach. However, this could be due to the fact the Duchess’ children are at a very young age while Queen Letizia’s daughters are now teenagers.
When Princess Sofia and Princess Leonor were little girls, however, Queen Letizia showed a much more loving parenting style, similar to the one Kate displays with her children. Gestures that are now long gone.
“From the body language in her poses Queen Letizia appears to have managed to pull off a very difficult feat for any parent: keeping her children closely cherished when they were smaller with some emphatically tender and loving tactile displays,” Judi explained.
“Then allowing them space to grow as young adults with a sense of what looks like independence and confidence.
“The earlier poses are all about cuddles, face-gazing, eye-checking and spontaneous-looking hugs that involve both her husband and her daughters. The snuggling and protective signals are strong but it is clear from some of the later poses as the girls get older than they have also been allowed to grow into confident-looking teenagers.”
During some of the last appearances when the four members of the family were seen together, “both girls walk with their heads up and arms down at their sides, showing how well the look of regal elegance and social confidence has been handed down from mother to her daughters.
“We can see Letizia inducting her daughters into royal life by providing a role model for how to sit and behave in public but also keeping a smiling eye on them to suggest ongoing protection and pride,” Judi explained.
However, Queen Letizia was seen as a very affectionate mother while saying goodbye to her daughter Leonor as she moved to study in Wales earlier this month.
“When her eldest daughter went to University in Wales this year we can see Letizia placing a loving and clinging arm around her neck and pressing her face against her daughter’s as they said their goodbyes at the airport.”
On the other side, and on the rare occasions when she is seen with her three young children, the Duchess of Cambridge seems like a warm and loving mum.
“Kate, as future Queen and mother of a future King, is the consummate pro in terms of presenting the pitch-perfect, immaculate royal family moments,” Judi said.
“She seems intent on being a very face-to-face mum, bending to the height of her children when talking to them and even part-kneeling in a bid to give them her full attention and to tune into their feelings and emotions.”
Judi continued: “With the children so publicly on show like this she has to manage a tactile, close-up approach with ensuring a sense of fun but no tears of tantrums, alongside the normal royal demands.”
Judi explained that Kate “uses touch rituals and eye contact or face-watching as her tie-signs and these can be a constant form of non-verbal reassurance, checking and communication touches that will help her tune in to her children when they appear in public.”
“Her royal role shows her leading two or possible three young children clad in heels and the kind of stylish outfits that are not child-friendly.”
However, she revealed that “Kate’s elegant exterior suggests the swan through water comparison;
“Looking calm and beautiful on the surface while paddling away furiously underneath to achieve that effect.”
