The death of Prince Philip was announced on Friday. The Duke of Edinburgh passed away at his home in Windsor.

Sophie, Countess of Wessex made an appearance later outside a church service at Windsor Castle.

She told gathered press of Philip’s death: “It was right for him. It was so gentle.

“It was just like somebody took him by the hand and off he went. Very, very peaceful and that’s all you want for somebody isn’t it?”

The royal is said to have been with the Queen in recent days.

It has long been reported the Queen and Sophie have a particularly close relationship.

Sophie has taken on more royal duties to fill in the gaps left in the royal rota by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

A body language expert told Express.co.uk Sophie “quietly showed how she will step up in times of crisis or tragedy” with her incredibly touching statement about Philip’s death.

Looking at Sophie’s appearance outside the church, Judi James told Express.co.uk: “Sophie showed the type of confidence that implies fond closeness to her mother-in-law plus knowing that saying what she thought and felt would be saying the right thing.

“Her beautiful words about the Prince’s ‘gentle death’ would prompt both tears and comfort at the same time and they appeared to give a very personal view of a family member she clearly adored.”

She went on: “She also quietly showed how she will step up in times of crisis or tragedy, answering questions from the news team quickly and naturally to help her husband compose some rather more formal responses.

“Sophie looks and sounds like someone the Queen might trust and who feels and understands what she is going through currently.

“The two women are said to be close friends and Sophie’s body language has also shown a fondness for and rapport with Prince Philip over the years.

“While possibly needing to keep a brave face on for her children and for the rest of the country over the next few weeks, it would be gratifying to think that The Queen also has empathetic Sophie to confide in and to take comfort from.”

Judi previously suggested Sophie appears to have been with the Queen, comforting her during this period.

She explained: “She looked and sounded sympathetic and empathetic, sounding very much as though she had been at the Queen’s side offering the right words and support for a woman famous for her stoicism and emotional resilience.

“We don’t know if The Queen bravely masks her emotions in private as she does in public but if she needed the right level of mirrored personal sadness and sympathy to allow herself to share her grief in a way that parents sometimes can’t do with their own children at a time like this then it would seem that Sophie would fit the bill perfectly.”

Today the most high-ranking and high-profile royals will attend Prince Philip’s funeral.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, only 30 can attend the solemn event.

Attendees include the Queen’s direct descendants and their husbands or wives, except Meghan Markle.

There will also be a number of people from Prince Philip’s side of the family, as well as Sarah Chatto, Princess Margaret’s daughter.

The public is being urged not to travel to Windsor and to watch the event on TV.
