As the warm weather has finally hit the UK, many may be struggling to keep cool. The secret is to learn how to manage the body temperature to ensure a good night sleep.

The body temperature is lowest while you are sleeping, as it is regulated by the brain’s circadian clock which drives the 24-hour patterns of sleep and wakefulness.

A report from the Sleep Medical Reviews journal revealed that the easiest way to drop our body temperature before going to sleep is by taking a hot bath.

Moreover, the drop in temperature after a bath will help you sleep better.

Bathroom expert, Dominic Lees-Bell explained this is the most basic and effective trick and one many people might not be aware of.

“Many are looking at buying expensive fans or freezing hot water bottles, but one of the simplest ways to cool down is to actually take a hot bath.

“We recommend taking a hot shower to cool down during this UK heatwave.”

He continued: “Taking a cold shower or bath can actually be counterproductive as when our body is submerged in extremely cold conditions it tries to regulate our core temperature.

“This means you could actually feel hotter than you did before you tried to cool down.

“By taking a hot bath we are able to drop our body temperature as it stimulates our bodies thermoregulatory system.

“This increases the circulation of blood throughout our body and results in the removal of body heat and therefore a decreased body temperature,” said Dominic Lees-Bell.

Research from the National Sleep Foundation also suggested that this method works very well during heatwaves.

They explained some people “do better taking hot showers and hot baths when the room temperature is very high.”

Another handy tip is the bowl of ice hack.

This is the best trick for those who still haven’t found a way to keep their house cool during the heatwave.

Put a bowl or Tupperware with ice in front of your fan. As the ice melts, the fan’s breeze will pick up the cool air creating a very pleasant breeze, similar to air conditioning.

Alternatively, you can place a wet towel over the fan to achieve the same effect.

Some other tips to keep your house cool during the heatwave:

Keep the curtains closed during the day

Open the windows when it gets cooler

Keep the lights off

Get more houseplants as they create a cooler environment as they release their excess water
