Tesco to slash petrol by 6.5p a litre after Asda sparks pump price war | The Sun

TESCO has slashed the price of petrol after Asda sparked a price war at the pumps.

The supermarket giant has cut the price of petrol by 6.5p a litre and diesel by 4.5p to help drivers save money at the pumps.

It comes after Asda slashed its prices on Friday, meaning drivers at its forecourts will pay on average 174p for unleaded and 185p for diesel.

According to latest Government figures, the average price of petrol was 186.67p, and for diesel, it's 195.91p.

Tesco has a total of 600 filling stations across the UK.

You can find your nearest one using the supermarket's forecourt locator tool.

Tesco chief product officer Ashwin Prasad said: "We know how tough rising fuel bills have been for households across the UK, and so we hope that these price cuts will go some way to help – particularly as more families head out on their summer holidays this week."

Prices at petrol stations across the country have finally started falling in recent days after pressure on retailers to reflect a drop in wholesale costs.

Retailers had been criticised for not not passing on the savings to motorists.

The AA said the price changes could see the cost of a tank drop by £10 within a fortnight.

Experts have advised motorists to look out for independent petrol stations who are under-cutting big names with smaller prices.
