The Natural History Museum ice rink is returning – but for the final time

It already feels very autumnal outside.

While we are pretty devastated that summer is drawing to a close (particularly because it’s been such a washout this year), there’s now every reason to get excited for the chillier months ahead.

And the run-up to Christmas in the capital wouldn’t be complete without the Natural History Museum ice rink.

The popular rink is a much-loved winter tradition in London – but sadly, due to Covid, it wasn’t running last year.

Thankfully, it’s set to return for 2021 after a year-long hiatus – but this will be the final time.

Due to open on October 22 and run until January 16 (2022), the ice rink will be located among South Kensington’s tree-lined streets and will boast a spectacular 30ft Christmas tree centrepiece.

The popular Café Bar will also be back with an array of hot food sold outside in the Museum Gardens.

Tickets are available now – priced at £8 for children, £11.50 for adults or £36 for a family – and skating lessons can be booked via the website.

The Penguin Skate Club will also return for children’s lessons on Saturday mornings from November 6 – 20 with sessions at 10am and 11am, and November 27 – January 8 (excluding New Year’s Day) with classes at 9am and 10am.

So there’s something for the whole family.

After the rink’s final stint, the museum’s five-acre grounds will be transformed into a biologically diverse green space – as part of the venue’s Urban Nature Project.

Clare Matterson, executive director of engagement at the Natural History Museum said: ‘We are really pleased that the ice rink is able to return for one last Christmas after such a difficult winter last year.

‘Following the closure of this year’s ice rink, the museum grounds will be transformed into a biodiversity hub through our Urban Nature Project, helping the next generation develop the strong connection with nature.’

Being the last hurrah, there’s no doubt tickets will be incredibly in demand – so it’s a good idea to book in advance to avoid disappointment.
