How is your sex life set to change in the year ahead?
You know, beyond going through a bit of a dry spell considering the third national lockdown?
As you might expect, sex this year is going to focus on self-love… by which we do indeed mean masturbation.
We chatted with Tyomi Morgan, the in-house sexpert at Sweet Vibes, for her predictions of the sex trends to expect in 2021.
Masturbation as self-care
It’s high time to make masturbation a key component of your lockdown routine.
‘With the rise in lockdown over the winter months and the skyrocketing sales of sex toys, more people are choosing to physically distance and take their pleasure into their own hands,’ says Tyomi. ‘Afterall, pleasure is one’s own responsibility.
‘Self-pleasure through masturbation is the safest form of sex, and a surefire way for one to reach the climax they desire, especially when kept at a distance from a partner.
‘For women especially, masturbation eliminates the orgasm gap often experienced in heteronormative couplings and ensures she will reach a climax. No more faking it, no more dissatisfaction.
‘Orgasms have so many health benefits from boosting the immune system to balancing hormones and releasing “feel good” chemicals into the bloodstream to elevate mood. To say that masturbation is a form of self-care is an understatement. It’s a health ritual.’
More sex toys
Related to the above, Tyomi reckons we’ll be buying more sex toys than ever before in the year ahead.
First-time buyers will dip their toe in the sex toy pool, too.
‘Many couples have been forced apart by the pandemic, and women who have traditionally relied on their partners to provide them with pleasure are not choosing to be more autonomous with taking control of their sexual needs,’ Tyomi notes. ‘The sex tech industry will definitely continue to see an increase in its profits.’
Virtual play dates
When we can’t physically be together, we’ve become more open to virtual dates.
In 2021, that openness will extend to getting sexual virtually, too.
‘As the world gathers itself in the midst of the shifting pandemic, spicing up dull sex lives and increasing sexual knowledge will become a priority for couples and singles,’ says Tyomi. ‘More people will be accessing digital sex education courses to meet their needs for enrichment and excitement.
‘Virtual play dates have become a trend in 2020 and will continue to increase through 2021 as lovers new and old navigate the “new normal”.
‘Meeting online to connect sexually is enhanced with sex toys that can be used at a distance, and via live streaming where lovers can see each other in real time.
‘Instagram even has the capability for friends and lovers to plan a virtual date night by watching movies together during video calls. More apps, social media platforms and digital spaces will be opening their virtual doors to intimate digital interactions, and the sex-positive will always find a way to use the tools for their pleasure.’
