Sir Thomas was born in Glasgow in 1848, and often helped his parents run their small shop in the Gorbals.

He eventually opened his own called Lipton’s Market in 1871, and it soon became a chain of more than 200 grocery shops across Britain by the 1880s.

In 1890, Sir Thomas bought a tea estate in Ceylon – now Sri Lanka. A change in processes meant that he could sell tea in his stores and globally more cheaply.

He began packaging loose tea in multiple weight options rather than in large crates, which reduced the cost of shipping.

Lipton was the first brand to sell tea leaves in tea bags, and the company is today owned by Unilever.

In 1892, Sir Thomas Lipton settled at Southgate’s Osidge Mansion, which has since been converted into flats.

In addition, eight separate new flats have built in the grounds, including the one that is currently for sale via estate agents Connect Property.

The living area has porcelain floor tiles, recessed ceilings with LED lighting, and a bespoke Italian kitchen. Double doors open out to the terrace that runs along the length of the flat.

There is underfloor heating throughout the property, and both bedrooms have ensuites, with the main bedroom also having a study space.

There are good transport links nearby, including Southgate station with links into central London. Brent Cross shopping centre is a short drive away and there is easy access to the M25.
