Prince William and Kate Middleton have been married for ten years and yet one questions remains from the royal wedding – why didn’t Prince William turn to look at Kate as she walked up the aisle?

Many of the 3 billion viewers of the wedding were left scratching their heads when William kept his head firmly facing the front of the Abby as Kate took four minutes to make her way to him.

Rather than a case of shyness or even rudeness – the answer is simple, it’s in keeping with traditional wedding etiquette.

The groom traditionally must be the last person in the room to lay eyes on his bride as she walks up the aisle to take her vows.

Many are superstitious to do it any other way and believe it to be back luck.

International viewers were especially confused, as this is typically a British tradition.

In the US, for example, a groom will likely watch his bride walk up the aisle, and many consider it the most romantic moment of the service.

This wasn’t the only tradition strictly adhered to on the day – Kate also made sure to wear a sleeved dress, which is a custom of royal brides.

However, one way they did break tradition was with the fact that Kate is technically the first queen consort to marry into the Royal Family without any prior connection to British nobility.

The couple also each chose to have their siblings play key roles at the wedding – Pippa Middleton was a bridesmaid while Prince Harry was William’s best man which was an unusual move for a royal wedding.

The couple today celebrated their 10 years together with a set of beautiful images shot by photographer Chris Floyd.

The photograph shows the time on William’s watch reading as shortly before half-past eleven meaning that their three children would have been at school and nursery – which could a clue as to why the parents look so relaxed.
