Women spends £8,200 on gastric sleeve surgery and mummy makeover

Mother, 36, who was fed up with being the ‘fat, funny friend’ because she had loose skin after shedding 7st unveils the results of her £5,500 ‘mummy makeover’ in Turkey

  • Makeup artist Kim Irving, 36, from Selby spent £8,200 on cosmetic procedures
  • She went from 17st to 9st 12lbs after undergoing gastric sleeve surgery in 2019
  • Unhappy with loose skin, she flew to Turkey for a mummy makeover in 2021

A mother-of-three revealed how she spent £8,200 on a new body after years of being the ‘fat and funny friend.’

Kim Irving, 36, from Selby, North Yorkshire, used to tip the scales at 17st, but lost 7st after a gastric sleeve surgery in Turkey in 2019, costing her £2.700.

Unhappy with her loose skin after the weight loss, the make-up artist decided to have a ‘mummy makeover’ for £5,500 in September 2021, also plumping for surgery in Turkey because it was cheaper than the UK.

The makeover surgery included a tummy tuck, a breast lift with fat injections and a pubic lift, and saw Kim go from a size 10 to a size 8.

While Kim is happy with her results, the NHS stresses the importance of doing your own research when considering going through with cheap surgery abroad to make sure all safety standards are observed and to avoid potentially health complications.

Kim Irving, 36, from Selby, North Yorkshire, used to tip the scales at 17st, left, but lost seven stone and fell to 9st 12lbs after a gastric sleeve surgery in Turkey for £2,700 in 2019. In September, she underwent a mummy makeover in Turkey for £5,500 so she could get rid of her loose skin and finally wear the dresses she wanted, right

The mother of Maddison, 18, Lily, 15 and Aiden, 14, said she felt she could not dress in the outfits she wanted in spite of her amazing weight loss, due to saggy skin.

She says that she piled on the pounds after she got a job in a Chinese takeaway as a teenager and would get a free meal four times a week after work.

Kim, a make-up artist, added: ‘I tried lots of diets and managed to lose 2st. However, I hit a wall and couldn’t lose anymore.

‘So I decided to look into weight loss surgery, and I have never looked back.

After losing seven stone, Kim still felt her loose skin was holding her back and decided to have a mummy makeover, which includes a tummy tuck

‘I’ve shed over 7st and I feel better than I have ever felt.

‘However after losing weight, I still wasn’t happy with how my body looked. I still couldn’t wear all of the things I wanted to because of my loose skin.

‘So I decided to go back to Turkey for the “mummy makeover” package. And I am so happy with my new body.

‘Although I was big, I was never really miserable. I was just the funny, fat friend.’

Before shedding the weight, the mother-of-three said she was not ‘miserable’ but grew tired of shopping in the plus size section

Following the mummy makeover surgery in 2021, Kim has felt like a new woman and can finally wear the clothes she wants

‘I always had to shop in the plus-sized section of shops and I just got sick of it.

‘I wanted to be able to buy the beautiful dresses that I would see on Oh Polly and Pretty Little thing.

‘And I felt a lot of pressure to look a certain way from working in the make-up industry because all of my clients are stunning.’

After doing some research online, Kim decided to opt for a gastric sleeve and she was going to fly to Turkey for the procedure.

The mother-of-three said she is impressed with the result of her surgery and has now turned into a shopaholic

She says that the procedure cost her £2,700 compared to the cheapest UK price she found, which was £8,000.

Kim said: ‘The difference between the prices is crazy, it was a no brainer.

‘I paid £600 for my flights, and then in August 2019, I boarded the plane with my husband and off I went.

‘I couldn’t wait to get it done because I had seen so many amazing before and after pictures.

After her plastic surgery, Kim now feels confidence to show her skin off and to wear the bikinis and dresses she wants

‘It was the first operation I had ever had but I knew it was going to be worth it.

‘After returning home from Turkey, I lost 13lbs in nine days. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I stepped on the scale, I nearly passed out.

‘Two years after my weight loss surgery, I’d lost 5st 12lbs, not including the weight I had previously lost from dieting, and I felt amazing.

‘However it was a mental battle to go from a size 20 to a size 10, and although I had lost so much weight I still didn’t feel like I could wear the clothes and swimwear I’d been dreaming of because I had a lot of loose skin.

What you should know before booking cheap surgery abroad

The NHS stresses the importance of doing your own research before going through surgery abroad.

It warns that safety standards may night be as high as in the UK in other countries, and that no surgery is risk-free.

In case of complications, it states that overseas clinics might not offer follow-up treatments, which can leave you particularly vulnerable if you require follow-up treatment.

The NHS recommends to look into all aspects of her procedure in order to make sure they’re all up to code

This includes:

– consultations

– the procedure

– risks and complications

– aftercare

It also advises to stay clear of holiday packages offering cosmetic surgery, and states that if you do go for a holiday package surgery, you should also have a consultation with the surgeon and not pay for a hospital you have not seen, or pay a surgeon you’ve never met.

The NHS also recommends to inquire about cosmetic surgery aftercare and what it entails before you book any surgery abroad.

It added you should check the standards for qualification in the country you wish to have surgery in.

It said it was a good idea to find out how surgeons and clinics are regulated in your chosen country and how standards are enforced.

It added you should ask your surgeon

– what training and qualifications they have

– what organisations they belong to

– how long they have been practising

– how many procedures like the one you’re having they have done

It added the surgeon needs to be able to talk you through the procedure and its risk and to answer all your questions and address your concerns.

There should also be at least two consultations before you go through with the procedure.

Six weeks after her surgery, as the swelling went down, Kim started really noticing the results of her plastic surgery.

Kim said: ‘When I first saw myself I couldn’t believe that it was my body I was looking at. My stomach was so tight and my belly button was perfect.

‘I formed a shopping addiction because I couldn’t wait to try on clothes and bikinis, without having to worry about my loose skin or wearing hold-in underwear.

‘I was getting clothes deliveries every day. I love my body now and I am filled with so much more confidence. I’ll never have to go under the knife again.

‘It feels amazing to be happy in my own body and be able to dress the way I have always wanted to.’
