Lorraine Kelly says she struggled to go to work as she thought her dad was dying

For millions of fans, Lorraine Kelly is a bright start to the day but she has recently opened up about her secret struggles.

But the ITV star was going through hell at home, as she and her family thought that they were going to lose her dad, as he was suffering a tough illness.

And it got so difficult that she struggled to go to work and present her self-named show to its millions of daily viewers.

Lorraine, 61, spoke to the Sunday People and opened up about what she has been going through.

She said: "I have quite a sunny disposition, but I’ve had days when I have really struggled to go in to work – I’ve just felt a bit overwhelmed by it all.

"I try to talk myself around. I say you are very lucky to have work and to do such an interesting job.

"I try to get myself out of that mood by speaking to my best friend in Spain, who I’ve not seen in over a year.

"And in the week if I’m having a bit of a wobble I talk to my mum, I talk to my daughter, I talk to my husband and I also talk to my work colleagues."

She added: "People are realising in all this that it’s actually OK to feel wobbly emotionally."

Lorraine explained that she and her family went through a "few very tough months" as they thought they would lose her dad.

She explained that, this time last year, he'd been in hospital but just got out before the Covid pandemic really kicked off.

Lorraine's dad has heart failure, but also had a lung cancer scare which turned out to be a "massive, massive infection".

After going through her struggles, Lorraine is currently running a Positivity Project about getting through lockdown.

But one of the hardest parts for her over the past year has being kept away from her parents due to lockdown rules.

Lorraine lives apart from her parents as she is in London and they are in Scotland and she will be missing out on a family gathering for her mum’s 80th.

She said she'd love to take her parents over to Singapore to visit her younger brother Graham and his girlfriend, so they could all celebrate her mum's big birthday.

“That will be such an emotional, amazing celebration," she said. "I just hope we can do it out of travel restrictions.”

Luckily, both her parents have now had the coronavirus vaccine, much to her relief.
