Paul O'Grady was forced to halt his final BBC Radio 2 show as his dogs interrupted the broadcast.

The 67-year-old star took to airwaves to host his self-titled show for the final time on Sunday (August 14) after 14 years.

However, things didn't go quite go to plan as his pooches could be heard making noise.

Listeners could hear Paul's dogs barking in the background as he was speaking to his producer Malcolm.

Paul said: "Can you just hold on a minute, Malcom."

He could be heard getting up and shouting: "Can somebody shut those dogs up."

After a short pause, he yelled: "Stop it! you're going straight back to Battersea".

Malcolm later joked: "That's what he says to me."

The show carried on as normal and fans rushed to Twitter to send their well wishes to Paul and Malcolm on their final programme.

One fan penned: "I''m so sad Paul O'Grady's show is coming to an end."

Another added: "Dear @malprin & Mr Paul O’Grady, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart, for all the giggles, the belly laughs, the double entendres & those disgusting cocktails.

"You’ve both got me though some dark times, and I’m gutted it’s ending, however, I totally understand

A third person posted: "Very sad to be listening to the last Paul O’Grady Sunday show on @BBCRadio2 Listened for years so really feels like the end of an era. Thank you for all your hard work @malprin."

While a fourth social media user said: "Sad listening to the last Paul O’Grady show on @BBCRadio2 . He’s a good guy and plays great music.."

Paul announced his shock departure from Radio 2 earlier this week, with speculation around the reasoning behind his exit swirling – but broke his silence before he took to the airwaves.

Taking to social media hours before heading on air, Paul addressed the reasoning behind his departure from the radio gig and revealed it to be because of his "unhappiness" surrounding the working pattern.

Chatting in a video on his page, Paul began: "Can you hear those dogs barking, honestly, I can't do anything," hinting at his everlasting love for dogs and animals.

He then said: "I just want to say that tonight is my very last show on Radio 2 after 14 years! I have never had a job for that long.

"So I want to say thank you very much for listening and for all your emails and all your messages and all the fun I've had over the years.

Addressing the reasoning behind his exit, Paul then revealed: "And the reason I'm leaving because everybody's asked me this. It's because I wasn't really happy with the 13 weeks on/13 weeks off business."

He added: "So, I did the honourable thing and I honoured my contract, gave my notice and now I'm off.

"Anyway, thanks very much and good luck to everyone on Radio 2 and long may you continue!"
