Scissor Sisters star performed voodoo exorcism to stop ghost from humping him

Scissor Sisters frontman Jake Shears has opened up about performing a voodoo exorcism to put an end to a ghost "humping" him during his stay in New Orleans.

The I Don't Feel Like Dancin singer shared his harrowing experience on the A Gay and A NonGay podcast, recounting how he sought help from the city's voodoo community after waking up on his first two nights in town to find a male spectre engaging in unwanted intimate activity with him.

Jake, 44, said, “I was moving to New Orleans about seven years ago and it was so bizarre. I stayed with this woman I had never met before. Her name was Suzy and she was really cute.

"When I got out of the cab I remember a black cat crossing my path."

He described his host's home as being filled with dolls, adding, "It was very New Orleans."

The singer's terror began when he woke up in the middle of the night, initially believing a cat had jumped onto the bed.

He recalled, “I realized it was a knee and somebody was behind me and I couldn’t move."

Jake described the ghostly figure reaching down and touching him inappropriately, causing him to feel "completely frozen" and "terrified."

The ordeal continued when the spirit returned the following night.

Determined to put an end to the ordeal, Jake consulted with a voodoo practitioner in New Orleans.

He said, “I went to the voodoo shops in New Orleans and talked to this lady and got some stuff to burn."

Following her advice, he used a broom to perform a ceremony, swishing it around while telling the amorous spirit, “I’m not what you are looking for.” To his relief, the ghost never returned.

Though the experience was "terrifying," Jake, whose real name is Jason Sellards, now believes it was the city's unique way of welcoming him.

He said, “It scared the hell out of me, but it was kind of like the city was bringing out its welcome wagon to me.’’

The Scissor Sisters’ self-titled first album was the best selling of 2004, topped the charts, spawned five top 20 singles and won them three BRIT Awards.

After I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’ reached No1 in the UK singles chart the band split.

Shears will release his second solo album later this year.
