The 'Black Panther' and 'The Mandalorian' Scores Were Composed by the Same Person

When it comes to The Mandalorian and Black Panther, fans might not think the Disney+ series and Marvel Cinematic Universe film have anything in common. However, the music for Black Panther and The Mandalorian were actually made by the same composer, Ludwig Göransson.

Ludwig Göransson won an Academy Award for scoring ‘Black Panther’

Black Panther was released in 2018. The movie became the first MCU film to win an Academy Award after winning for Best Costume Design, Best Original Score, and Best Production Design at the 2019 Academy Awards.

Göransson composed the score for Black Panther, and he took home the Academy Award for Best Original Score thanks to his work.

Before the 2019 Academy Awards took place, Göransson sat down for an interview with Slash Film to discuss the nomination and his work on Black Panther.

“The most important thing for me and [director] Ryan [Coogler] in making the music for this film was to have the score rooted in traditional African music,” Göransson told Slash Film. “That was the number one most important thing. I actually went to West Africa right after I read the script. I told Ryan, ‘The only way I can score this movie is to go to Africa and do my research and immerse myself in the culture.’”

Ludwig Göransson also composes the music for ‘The Mandalorian’

The Mandalorian is part of the Star Wars franchise, and the series premiered on Disney+ in 2019. At the time of the Slash Film interview about his Academy Award nomination with Black Panther, Göransson was working on The Mandalorian.

“Oh man, I’m so excited for it. I’d say for a film composer, Star Wars is kind of like the holy grail of film music. It’s probably the best film music ever written. So the Star Wars universe, for any composer, it’s like one of the most exciting things you can work on,” the composer told Slash Film.

He continued, “I’ve never seen anything like it. For me to be a part of a Star Wars show that’s doing something – it’s a new format, so I think for me doing the music, hopefully I’m really inspired to put my signature on it as well as obviously honoring the legend, John Williams.”

Ludwig Göransson thinks ‘Black Panther’ is like ‘Star Wars’

In the interview with Slash Film, Göransson gave details about the first time he watched a rough cut of Black Panther. After seeing an early version of the film, Göransson compared the MCU film to Star Wars.

“A couple of months after I spent my time in Africa, after I saw the film, it was a four hour cut with no music in it. It was incredible. It was such an experience. I called my wife and I was crying and I told her, ‘This is the Star Wars of our generation.’ I was so moved by it,” he said.

While continuing to compose the music for The Mandalorian, Göransson will also score the sequel to Black Panther, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
