A bloke has been arrested for letting his dog steer his car as they drove around downtown Jerusalem.

The suspect, a 35-year-old man from the Arab village of Ein Naqquba west of the Israeli city, is expected to face reckless driving charges.

The dog is not expected to face prosecution.

Video of the bizarre event spread like wildfire across Israeli WhatsApp groups on Monday (September 5), prompting Israel’s Central Traffic Unit to pick up on the incident.

Local police were dispatched to track down and apprehend the driver's owner.

"The suspect behaved in a reckless and improper manner when he let his dog hold onto the steering wheel, thereby endangering road users," the police said in a statement.

"He then went on to share footage of the dangerous act which reached the police. Whoever does such things is playing with human lives. We will continue to work to enforce and prosecute serious traffic violations."

While canine motorists are somewhat unusual, dog drivers are not exactly unprecedented.

A dog rescue shelter in Aukland, New Zealand, launched a pooch driving school back in 2012.

The bizarre initiative was part of a bid by SPCA Auckland, an animal rescue charity in the country, to try to change people’s opinions about rescue dogs.

Three rescue dogs named Monty, Ginny, and Porter were shown on video showing off their driving skills on an outdoor track.

The SPCA warned on their Facebook page: “ In the interest of everyone’s safety, please don’t try to teach your dog to drive.

“Porter, Ginny and Monty were trained in a safe, controlled environment under the guidance of professionals. All training was conducted with animal safety as top priority in a specially modified vehicle."
